Dad, playing ball, chasing kitties
Having toys taken away before he destroys them
Any kind of ball or anything to chew on
So far, anything edible
Anywhere and everywhere
He's still learning!
Both of us have had dogs in our lives for decades, usually two or more at a time. We lost both of our big beautiful boys about three months apart, Ringo in April 2015 and Webster in July. Even with three cats in our home, the house - and our lives - felt so empty. After a few disappointments when potential adoptees found homes before we got to meet them, we found Bear on the website of the Humane Society in Buffalo, Minnesota. We went to meet him on Sunday, August 9th and knew he was our guy... but not until after we thought we were in for another letdown! When we first walked back to his kennel, one of the staff was walking away and there was a woman with a child sitting on the floor in front of the kennel, giving him treats. After a bit of conversation, we learned that they were just there visiting the animals... WHEW! During the interview process, we heard that he came from a shelter in Alabama that could not place him or care for him, that he reacted to other critters that passed his door, that he was not house-trained, or trained in any other way, as far as they knew, that his teeth were quite worn down (a sign of spending too much time living in a kennel), and that he had to be kept in a fully-enclosed kennel or he would be over the top in a flash. But somehow we just knew that he had been chosen for us by Ringo and Webster. So we signed the papers and took him home. It didn't take long to discover that our sixth senses were accurate... Bear is a wonderful dog.
It has been a week now since Bear arrived at his new home, and we have no regrets. In that short time, two of our three cats have become comfortable around him, and the third (Buddy) is making progress in that direction. Bear is never crated or kenneled here, nor is he tethered inside our fenced yard. He hasn't mauled any cats, jumped the fence, or had any accidents in the house. He is a pleasure on the leash when we go for our walks, and likes to make friends with people we encounter along the way. He is a high-energy dog (hard to believe he is really six years old; that may have been a bad estimate which was based on his worn teeth) so we do have to take toys away from him occasionally before he shreds them with his very powerful jaws. But he has not chewed anything that was not given to him to play with. He's a bright boy who seems eager to please, so hopefully we'll both enjoy his training. Bear is a gift from God, chosen by our Angels.
I'm a wild and crazy guy!
