The New Park

We have a new park to go to. This one is tucked away in a nice quiet neighborhood where the people and the dogs gather every evening. Most of the dogs are nice, most of the time.

But one evening was different. It started off when a small mixed breed dog ran around and nipped at the other dogs and wouldn't come when called by his frustrated person. Then there was another dog that tried to hump me. I wouldn't let him do that, and Mom kept stepping between me and the humper. Then a dog ran up and hiked his leg and peed on Mom's pant leg! Right after that, another dog ran up and hiked his leg on the same leg of Mom's pants! The dog's people were so embarrassed and kept apologizing to Mom. Mom just smiled. Oh well. This wasn't one of our better days at the park.

desensitizing at the coffee shop

Libraries and coffee shops are a challenge. Am I being protective? Am I scared? Do I feel trapped? We stopped going to the library until we can work this out. Now we go into the coffee shop every day to walk around and see the other dogs and children while Mom observes my reaction. I like other dogs at the park, and I sniff the hand of a well mannered child who wants to say "hello", so what's the deal?

Molly is my doggie friend. She is also a CKC spaniel and the store dog at the East Sacramento Hardware. She sees all kinds of people and dogs every day. Molly doesn't feel comfortable with small noisy children, either. But she walks away and goes to her bed behind the counter until they leave the store.

Mom's caught a cold so we'll have to skip the coffee shop today. She found a video about clicker training and we'll try that and see if it works. mom doesn't have a clicker but she can make clicking sounds with her mouth.

Brush up training

I'm a very well mannered little fella. I wait until Mom says "OK. Go say hello" then i give a sniff of the hand or dog nose and let them pet me. But I'm worried when we go into a crowded store. I stick close to Mom and i lay down beside her or behind her when we are checking out. at the library, I'm worried. Mom is quiet in the chair and when someone comes up too close, I growl. if there are noisy children running around I worry that they will hurt me, so I watch them and growl. Mom says that isn't nice and she has been trying to train me to look up at her whenever I feel worried. I'm definately not measuring up to the bomb proof service dog I should be. But I still do my job very well and Mom has been having a rough time.

But life has been full of changes for me too. We moved. The neighborhood is different and the people are meaner, envious of me, and greedy when they estimate how much money I'm worth. Mom's worried that I'll be kidnapped like her first SD. She really needs me even if I'm not perfectly bomb-proof.

Maybe we need to refresh our training? Maybe i need more confidence? Maybe try a calming herb and a thunder wrap and see if that works? Maybe I should not come with mom to places like the library. She's calm there anyway. Libraries are safe places for Mom. So is the YMCA. But stores don't feel as safe. And lately, walking in our new neighborhood isn't feeling safe, either.

Mom needs freinds. she can't stay in contact with her siblings anymore because they scoff at mom when she tells them how she's doing, or the laugh at her like she's a joke. I can't go there because they try to scare me and they tease me. Mom, you might be related to these people, but they aren't your freinds. Family should be freinds, but not all families are good. Mom feels very alone now.
