Arrival Story:
Well, I was ready for the new dog. I had finally moved into the new apartment, for the most part, all my furniture was moved in, it was simply a matter of getting that new special pooch of my very own. I tried really hard to go to a rescue or a shelter. I filled out numerous applications and and spoke to many people. Nobody was even willing to let me see a dog I was interested in. So, I came home and hit Craigslist. I found an add about a male black lab mix whom desperately needed a home. I emailed the family, and asked if he was OK with cats. They stated that the dog hadn't ever met a cat before, so they didn't know how he would react to one. We set up an appointment on a cold and rainy Thursday afternoon for one of my cats and I to come over and meet the dog. Axl met Ifrit, and Ifrit was greeted with nuzzles and licks. He didn't understand that the dog was trying to be friendly, but I could. So we left with the dog coming with us. His old name was Blaze, his new name is Axl. Axl is your typical puppy. He's hyper and happy, chews on anything, and generally loves to play. He's still learning things- he hasn't been trained very well so now it's a big job ahead, but I'm confident, with some patience and a loving hand, Axl will turn into the most awesome dog ever.

My Diary

A year old!

Well, Axl turns a year old in two short days, and it's been only 6 months since he came into our home, but it feels like he's been there all along.

He's turned from destructo-dog into a sweet, mild mannered, still-semi-hyper lab/pit mix that wins over the heart of everyone he meets.

I work for a microchip company call center (and would do it even if they weren't paying me..), and Axl got to come along and meet some of my co-workers today. He sat at my desk and 'took a call' or two. (More like, I put my headset on him while a co-worker took a picture. :) )

He's stopped being so destructive! It's amazing to me.. This was a dog that I could simply NOT trust out of the crate unsupervised no matter what- and if I left him out and was going to not be watching him I needed to put an open-ended mesh muzzle on him to keep him out of trouble, and for the most part, he goes for his rawhides rather than anything he's not allowed to have. (He did have a small relapse today, but nothing major / not fixable. He did get scolded however and put in time out in the cage for a while..)

I left him out all day yesterday while I was at work- 9 hours+ ... nothing out of place.

He's allowed to sleep in my bed with me unsupervised. Nothing goes out of place.

I take him pretty much everywhere I can, and he goes to the dog park at least once every few days to blow off steam and get the energy out of his system.

I'm just happy we're finally getting to the end of the destructo-dog phase.. He has a socialization class tomorrow at Petco.. :) I can't wait!
