: Pudelpointers are known for their steady temperament, good attitudes and work ethic. Bred for the Pointer’s intelligence and versatility, and the Poodle’s weatherproof coat and endurance, the Pudelpointer is an outstanding water dog and a faithful friend.
Around the home, the Pudelpointer enjoys togetherness and affection. While protective and watchful, it makes for a very restrained watchdog. Make sure the Pudelpointer gets a lot of fresh air and exercise to maintain a healthy state of mind and body. It is very easy to train and loves having “work” to do.
Things You Should Know
: The Pudelpointer can live as long as 14 years with relatively few genetic health issues; however, some may develop canine hip dysplasia. Grooming its dense, wiry coat (or smooth coat, depending on the Pudelpointer) is fairly simple. Strip the coat occasionally—either by hand or with help from a professional—and brush it every week.
Pudelpointer History
: The Pudelpointer originated when a 19th century breeder decided to combine the best qualities of the Poodle and the Pointer into one fabulous dog. Used as a water-oriented bird hunter and companion, the Pudelpointer is somewhat rare in North America, but it’s earning more fans every year.
The Look of the Pudelpointer
: The Pudelpointer is a medium-sized, athletic and alert dog covered in a dense and wiry chocolate coat. Some Pudelpointers have shorter, smoother coats. Its well-proportioned, handsomely shaped head has dark, friendly eyes, hanging ears and (usually) a wiry beard. Its solid frame leads down to a thick, horizontal tail that is sometimes docked. Overall, the Pudelpointer has an alert and rugged look.
