Training

So my pup is about 81/2 months and he is mostly potty trained. The problem is when we trained him we did not allow him in the carpeted bedrooms or the bathroom with rugs. Now that he is potty trained we have started to leave the doors open to all rooms. And he thinks it is ok to poop on the carpet or the rugs. Can someone please tell me what to do!

LOL I had same issue with Lola! We have hardwood floor upstairs and downstairs carpet. We never went downstairs much, so we never thought about it. Until about 2 months ago, when she was downstairs with my "basement dwellers" and she just... squatted and pee'd! She has done it 3 times. The first time I didn't think much except she couldn't scratch on the door as a signal. The 2nd time I figured out that she must not realize that carpet isn't ok. I caught her in the act all 3 times and yelled (mostly from shock) "outside" and took her immediately upstairs outside. Now when we're downstairs she'll go to the foot of the stairs and look at me. I know this is her sign.
You pretty much have to re- potty train him, in these areas. Don't leave him unsupervised in the carpeted areas, just like you did during the initial potty training. Do the same thing you did when you potty trained him. W/ Lola it only took 3x of getting her to catch on because she was potty trained b4

I would not leave him unsupervised in the carpeted areas at all. That way there is less of a chance that there will be an accident! I would just as Lola posted above to "repotty" train in these areas. Just keep him on a leash or with you when you are in the new areas. Slowly make sure he has been outside long enough to do his business and eventually you will be able to leave all the doors open! :D

Your dog is about the age when accidents shouldn't happen anymore. I believe that he goes potty on these carpet because 1. the novelty of them and 2. because of the way they smell maybe?

Start over with potty training and don't let your puppy go out of your sight. If you do this you'll be able to catch him in the act and give a firm "No" and take him outside where he is supposed to go.

Because you are dealing with carpet the odor is harder to get out so make sure you are cleaning up well or else the smell is only telling the pup that its ok to go potty there again. Here is a good tip for making sure that odors are completely out, check out tip #6 on the following link: k9domain.web.officelive.com
