Pug Training Difficulties
Frank is a purebred pug. He's 4 years old. I got him last week. He doesn't know how to stay behind me, I've tried changing direction and other things, but it doesn't work. He wants to zigzag in front of me too. It's annoying. Today I wrapped his retractable leash around my wrist and he stayed behind me, but is there an easier way to get him to learn?
He doesn't know any commands, and I read about training a dog but he still doesn't seem to understand. Any training tips for that area?
Also, he loves me. The previous owners say he doesn't lick faces, but when I come home he gets so excited and licks my face all over. He sleeps in my room at night. But during the day, when I go up to my room, he follows me but goes back downstairs sometimes and just chills by my brother or dad. Why?
One more thing, he doesn't like pooping in the yard. He wants to do it in neighbor's yards, which is embarrassing, and on the curbs. Why doesn't he want to do it in our yard? Thanks.

He sounds like a normal dog, honestly. My dog is super excited when I come home too, but isn't all over me all the time.
Some dogs don't like to soil their own territory, including their yard. Some dogs accidentally end up trained to only poop on walks because that's the only time they were allowed to. (Especially dogs that never had a yard before and only went out on leash.) Just carry poop bags and clean up thoroughly, it's nothing to worry about.
Training is difficult when both the owner and dog are novices. I recommend finding a beginner obedience class to start you in the right direction- find one that uses rewards and positive reinforcement, not choke collars and leash jerks!
Almost no one makes their dog walk behind them. That's a Cesar Millan thing, not necessary. And NEVER wrap the retractable cord around your hand, it's dangerous! People have lost fingers that way! Get a regular 4-6 foot leash for training instead.
I'm outta space, try the training forum for more help.

I agree with everything Bruno said, and I want to remind you that there is NO WAY your dog is going to learn all this stuff in ONE WEEK, especially when it is going to take him AT LEAST several weeks or more to become comfortable and used to his new home.
For the first few weeks just use lots of treats and especially LOTS of love. And, don't forget to talk to him... he needs to know what you expect from him and showing him with treats and voice are way more effective than trying to drag him into place with a collar and leash.
And, I also question WHY you think he needs to stay behind you??? I prefer to have my dogs walk in front of me and enjoy their walk, not stay behind me just following where I chose to go.
Remember, relax and have FUN, a dog walk should be fun for YOU and expecially for your dog!!!!
