First time flier... any tips?

I may be traveling, by car, to California for two or three weeks, then flying home. I don't have anyone to keep my mini dachshund for me so she will be going with me. I'm really nervous about flying by myself. I've only done it once and I'm a very nervous flier. One thing I'm worried about is Layla barking a lot. She barks at people she doesn't know. She's done ok when I take her into pet stores so far. But I worry about all the noises and people. She's a very hyper little girl. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Also, any suggestions on the kind of carrier I should get? I have flibromyalgia and can't carry something too heavy. She weighs at least 13 pounds herself.

I think the airlines require a plastic carrier such as a Pet porter or Vari Kennel. It must be big enough for the dog to stand in it with it head erect. Talk to the airline. They have different rules and change them. Get the name of the person your talk to. Email may be better.

I know some airlines do not allow pets in the cabin at all, they can only be placed in cargo. I would NEVER put my dog in cargo.

If they do allow pets in the cabin make sure you book your flight early and reserve a spot for your pet. Must times there is a limit to how many pets can be in the cabin.
As for the carrier you need to check with the airlines and make sure it complies with their requirements on size. A inch off can make all the difference of whether she gets on that flight or not. Just remember your dog will have to remain in her carrier at all times. At the airport and on the plane.
As for the barking you may need to talk to your vet about possibly giving her a tranquilizer before her flight. It will make for a much more pleasant flight for everyone. A lot of people might get ticked off if they had to listen to that for a few hours.
