How to Name Your Basset Hound Puppy

Since you are likely going to repeat your puppy’s name multiple times a day for the next decade and a half or so, it’s important to get it right.

Names that are hard to say often get shortened to nicknames. A good rule of thumb is to choose a name that is two syllables or less; otherwise, it tends to get shortened. If you are choosing a long name because it has significance to you, make sure you are comfortable with the shortened version. For example, suppose that you name your pup “Wilhelmina” because it was your grandmother’s name. Other people or even you will probably shorten it to “Will” or “Mina,” so make sure you’re okay with that.

There’s no set of rules for naming your Basset Hound pup. Some pets are named due to the uniqueness of their coloring or coat markings. Others are named for personality traits, while still others are named for pop culture, movies, and famous people.

Tips for naming your Basset Hound:
  • Make sure you can comfortably repeat the name over and over.
  • Choose a name that’s easy to say and easy for your pup to remember. Dogs typically only hear the first one or two syllables that you pronounce. That’s why dog commands are issued as single words.
  • Pick a name that stands out to you and trust your gut. It doesn’t matter why you like it; when you find the right name, you’ll know!
