This adorable breed has been considered to be a good option for those with allergies, though it is not truly hypoallergenic. But is it really true? Let’s explore the science behind hypoallergenic dogs and delve into whether the Havanese live up to their reputation.

We’ll discuss the breed’s unique features, such as their low-shedding coat, and examine the proteins that typically cause allergic reactions in humans. Understanding Dog Allergies and Hypoallergenic Breeds

First, let’s start by understanding what causes allergies in the first place. Allergies are the result of a person’s immune system overreacting to certain substances, such as pet dander, pollen, or dust mites. When a person with allergies comes into contact with these substances, their immune system produces antibodies against the allergen. Re-exposure to the same allergen triggers the release of histamine and other chemicals, which cause the signs of an allergic reaction, such as sneezing, itching, and hives.

So, what does it mean for a dog to be hypoallergenic? The term “hypoallergenic” is often used to describe dogs that are less likely to cause an allergic reaction in people. But note that no dog breed is completely hypoallergenic. All dogs produce various proteins which may cause an allergic reaction in people. These proteins may be present in your dog’s saliva, urine, sweat, skin, or in their dander. However, some breeds are thought to produce fewer allergy-inducing proteins, which can make them a better choice for people with allergies.

What Makes Havanese Dogs Hypoallergenic?

Havanese dogs are often promoted as hypoallergenic because of their coat. Though they possess a double coat, their hair is incredibly fine, and hair from their undercoat that does dislodge is often held onto the dog because of their top coat (also known as their guard hairs). This means that the breed sheds less, which may lower the amount of dander they release into their environment. The less dander a dog produces, the less likely they are to cause an allergic reaction in people.

But allergy sufferers may still react to Havanese dogs, despite their hypoallergenic reputation. This is because allergies are highly individualized, and what causes one person to react may not cause another person to react. In addition, an individual Havanese may produce more allergy-inducing proteins than another Havanese. This is determined by the dog’s individual genetics.

Common Myths and Misconceptions About Hypoallergenic Dogs

There are several common myths and misconceptions about hypoallergenic dogs that are worth addressing. First, as mentioned earlier, no dog breed is completely hypoallergenic. All dogs produce allergens to some degree, and some people may still react to dogs that are marketed as hypoallergenic. Another common myth is that people with allergies should look for dogs that don’t shed.

And yes, while it’s true that some breeds that shed less and may produce fewer allergens, shedding itself is not the problem. It’s the allergy-inducing proteins that dogs produce that cause allergic reactions. So, while a specific dog breed may shed less than another breed, it’s not a guarantee that they will be hypoallergenic.

Finally, some people believe that bathing a dog frequently can reduce allergens. While bathing can help remove dander and other allergens from a dog’s coat, it’s not a long-term solution. Your dog may return to the same level of allergens in their coat in as little as 2 days after a bath.

Do Havanese Dogs Live Up to Their Hypoallergenic Reputation?

So, do Havanese dogs live up to their hypoallergenic reputation? The answer is that it really depends on the person and the particular Havanese. If you’re considering getting a Havanese dog and you have allergies, be sure to spend time around the dog you’re interested in (not just the breed) before making a decision based on how your body reacts while you’re near them. If possible, visit a breeder or rescue organization and spend time with multiple Havanese dogs to see if there are any differences in your reaction.

Tips for Managing Allergies if You Own a Havanese Dog

If you have an allergy to dogs, the following tips may help you better manage your allergies:

Tips for Managing Your Dog Allergy
  • Discuss medication options with your doctor, depending on the severity of your signs.
  • Regularly clean and wipe down surfaces, such as walls, counters, tabletops, and baseboards.
  • Consider investing in an upholstery vacuum with a HEPA filter. Vacuum thoroughly around the house at least once or twice a week.
  • Replace any carpets in your house with smooth flooring wherever possible. Carpets are the primary “reservoirs” of allergens in your home and contain far more allergens than smooth surfaces such as tile, wood, or linoleum.
  • Professional steam cleaning is recommended for carpets that can’t be replaced.
  • A HEPA air filter is your best friend if you find yourself suffering from dog allergies.
  • It’s always a good idea to establish a dog-free zone or area in your house where your dog isn’t allowed.
  • Practice washing your hands before and after you interact with your dog to limit the amount of allergens that are on your hands. Avoid touching your face if you just touched your pup.
  • Since pet dander is on your clothing and other fabrics like your sheets, pillows, dog beds, and blankets, frequent laundry washes will remove quite a large amount of dander.

Although no dog is completely hypoallergenic, regular bathing can help reduce the amount of dander and other allergens in their fur and the air. We highly recommend Hepper's Oatmeal Pet Shampoo for this job!

Other Good Dog Breeds for Allergy Sufferers

If you find that you are allergic to Havanese dog breeds, know that hope is not lost. There are also other breeds worth considering that may be more allergy-friendly for you, however, it is important to note that the decision will ultimately come down to how your body reacts to an individual dog. Here are some of the most popular ones.

Poodles

Who doesn’t love an adorable Poodle? This breed is a popular choice for allergy sufferers because of their low rates of shedding, like the Havanese. They also come in different sizes, so you can choose a Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle depending on your preference.

Bichon Frise

These adorable little dogs are known for their curly, hypoallergenic coats that shed minimally. They are also great for families with children because they are gentle and affectionate. These dogs can be a bit expensive, so you may want to look at your budget before considering buying one from a breeder.

Schnauzer

Another great option is the Schnauzer. They also come in different sizes, so you can choose a Miniature, Standard, or Giant Schnauzer depending on your living situation. Schnauzers or super friendly and they are great with children.

Portuguese Water Dog

If you’re looking for a larger dog, the Portuguese Water Dog is a great choice. They have a thick, curly coat that doesn’t shed much, which makes them a good option for allergy sufferers. They are also known for their friendly, outgoing personalities. You’ll need to find a breeder for this dog as it’s pretty rare in the United States – which means it’s going to be more expensive.

Yorkies

Finally, the Yorkshire Terrier is a popular choice for allergy sufferers. They have a hypoallergenic coat that requires regular grooming to keep it looking its best. They are also known for their loyalty and affectionate personalities, which make them great companions. The great thing about Yorkies is that they are easy to keep up with.

Wrapping Things Up

Havanese dogs are often promoted as hypoallergenic. While they may produce less dander than other breeds, they aren’t completely hypoallergenic – no dog is. So, allergy sufferers may still react to them. If you’re considering getting a Havanese dog and you have allergies, you may want to spend time around the breed before making a decision and to work closely with your doctor to manage your allergies.

And if you find that a particular Havanese dog does trigger your allergies, you may consider a different individual or breed. From Poodles to Schnauzers to Bichon Frises, there is a low-shedding dog out there for everyone. So, don’t give up on your dream of owning a dog – just do a bit of research and find the breed that’s right for you.
