It’s easy enough to load your furry best friend in the car and go on an adventure, but what if you want to ditch the vehicle for a greener, less expensive alternative? E-bikes offer an Earth-friendly way to venture deeper into the wild, but going this route often requires your dog to stay behind, especially if they are a smaller breed.

Well, that’s not the case with the Heybike Mars 2.0. When equipped with their sturdy cargo basket and functional pet carrier, this powerful, fat tire e-bike becomes the perfect vehicle for adventure for you and your dog.

With the help of my Chihuahua, Papyrus, I tested out this new e-bike and its pet accessories. Keep reading to find out where it blew away my expectations, where I saw room for improvement, and more, in my full Heybike Mars 2.0 with pet accessories review.

    About Heybike

Heybike Mars 2.0 with Pet Accessories Review - close up of bike

Heybike has been making reliable and innovative e-bikes since 2021.

Who Makes Heybike and Where is it Produced?

Heybike is owned by cofounders Jasion and William Li. The company is headquartered in China, where the bikes are manufactured.

Which Types of Pets is Heybike Best Suited For?

The Mars 2.0 with Heybike’s pet accessories is a good option for small dogs who love adventure but can’t keep up with a speedy e-bike.

The Pet Bike Basket, which can hold dogs up to 18 pounds, has an open top design and is best suited for pups who will happily go along for the ride rather than those who might get antsy and try to jump out. For the latter, you may consider just getting the rear basket and using it to haul your dog in a secured carrier.

This bike, which is primed for backcountry travel and exploring, is also a great option for owners of larger dogs who would happily gallop alongside a bike.

    Key Features

Heybike Mars 2.0 with Pet Accessories Review - back view

There are a number of features that set Heybike’s Mars 2.0 apart from the growing e-bike competition. Here we will look at a few of them, including this bike’s functional design, powerful battery, features, and pet-friendly add-ons.

    Designed for Adventure

Heybike’s slogan is, “Let your joy out.” Well, if your joy is exploring the wildlands around you, then this bike will definitely help you do just that. The Mars 2.0 is designed for adventure, from its super-fat tires to its durable build.

Let’s start with those tires. At 4 inches wide and 20 inches tall, these beefy wheels were made to handle off-road trails. Combine all that rubber cushion with standard front suspension and shocks on the seat, and you’ve got a smooth ride wherever your wanderlust takes you.

This bike also features a foldable design, making it easier to transport it to those out-of-the-way destinations. But don’t think just because this bike folds that it’s easy to haul around. It weighs a hefty 75 pounds, a testament to how durable the frame is.

The Mars 2.0 comes standard with a Shimano 7-speed gear shift system, smartphone app connection, disc brakes, and a digital screen. Choose between the 750-watt or the 1000-watt option, which comes with updated hydraulic brakes.

If you love to go trail biking or camping with your pooch, or just want to explore more with your dog by your side, the Mars 2.0 is a great option.

    Powerful Battery

Another key aspect of the Mars 2.0’s adventure capabilities is its powerful battery.

The 1000-watt motor offers peak performance at 1800 watts, 100Nm of torque, and hits a top speed of 28 miles per hour. (For the record, my husband got this thing up to 35 mph with the help of a slight downhill.)

This battery takes about 7 hours to charge. Once fully juiced up, it can go an impressive 45 miles before needing to be charged again.

Compared to the original Mars model, the improved Mars 2.0 has a more powerful battery and better performance.

But be warned, the 1000-watt motor packs a punch. For me, someone who uses their e-bike to get around town and cart pets and kids to the park, this was almost too much power at times.

Heybike Mars 2.0 with Pet Accessories Review

    Key Features

The Mars 2.0’s impressive features don’t stop at a functional design and a powerful motor. With these bikes, you’ll also get:

    • A connected app to track use and battery charge, and to personalize your settings
    • Rear rack with pegboard to attach additional accessories
    • 120-pound rear rack carrying capacity
    • 330-pound payload capacity
    • The choice of orange, black, blue, or gray

This bike also features a fairly tall frame. It is recommended for riders who are between 5’3” and 6’1”.

As a 5’4” woman, I can tell you that I have the seat as far down as it will go and can only touch my toes to the ground. Unlike some e-bikes, this one features a step-over bike frame, which makes it a little tough to mount if you are on the shorter side.

    Pet-Friendly Add-Ons

There are two key Heybike pet accessories that you can use with your Mars 2.0.

The first is the Large Basket, which attaches to the rear rack. This addition is great for hauling pet supplies, such as treats, leashes, water, and water bowls. It can also be used to haul around smaller dog carriers and crates.

The second accessory worth investing in is the Pet Bike Basket. This is less of a basket and more of an attachable soft carrier.

This comfy pet travel option can be attached to the front handlebars for a “front basket” setup or secured in the rear basket. I prefer the former because it allows me to keep an eye on my dog as we travel.

Heybike has many other accessories that might be useful to pet owners, including numerous cargo options for carrying pet supplies and a Hauler Rear Rack to accommodate larger pet carriers. At this time, they do not make any bike buggies or options for hauling larger dogs.

Our Reviews of the Products We Received

    1. Mars 2.0

Heybike Mars 2.0 with Pet Accessories Review - Mars 2.0

The Mars 2.0 is a beefy and powerful e-bike with a multitude of uses. The big tires, powerful motor, and extra suspension make it great for off-roading. But if you have a little pup onboard, you may need to take things down a notch.

I’ve spent ample time riding this bike around the paved trails in my community with Papyrus in the Pet Bike Basket. On-road, it offers a smooth ride, and my dog always seems very content to watch the world fly by.

Where the ride is less than smooth, even on the sidewalk, is during the initial acceleration after stopping and when switching between PAC levels.

The lowest PAC level has a lot more power than other e-bikes I’ve tested—rocketing you from 0 to 8 mph in about one second. If you’re a speed demon, this is great, but if you have an elderly Chihuahua in the basket, it is simply too much.

Now, you can tweak the PAC settings a bit, but even after doing this, the initial acceleration still causes the bike to lurch forward startlingly fast. That being said, once I get going, I enjoy that extra power, as it makes getting up hills and moving through sand or over dirt trails effortless.

However, because this powerful steed has a max speed of over 28 mph and only 5 PAC settings, the difference between each is very noticeable. Let’s just say, jumping up PAC levels with this beast can be a bit of a bumpy ride.

    Pros
    • Powerful motor
    • Durable build
    • Smooth ride when in motion
    • Comfortable design
    • Great color options
    Cons
    • Jumpy between PAC levels
    • Very heavy
    • Takes time to assemble

    2. Heybike Pet Bike Basket

    Heybike Mars 2.0 pet basket

If you are looking for a comfortable way to bring your small dog with you on your e-bike, I found the Heybike Pet Bike Basket to be a pretty good option.

This soft yet sturdy basket features a fluffy fleece bottom liner, breathable mesh sides, and an adjustable top opening to help keep your pet secure. The dimensions are about 12 by 11 inches wide and 9 inches tall, and it can hold dogs up to 18 pounds.

This basket is made to be attached to the front handlebars or secured in the rear basket. A combination of straps and buckle clips makes it easy to keep the basket in place.

Inside the carrier, there is a single tether to help keep your pup safely inside. This tether is adjustable to accommodate small dogs of all heights.

Unfortunately, this tether is secured to the top of the basket, not the bottom. Because of this, even when it’s adjusted to its shortest length, it is still possible for the dog to jump out of the basket. Tightening the shrink rope around the top opening can help deter dogs from trying to leap out, but it won’t prevent them.

Bottom line, this is a safe and comfortable basket for dogs who are content to ride along with you, but it should not be used with dogs who will try to escape.

    Pros
    • Comfortable design
    • Multiple ways to attach it
    • Pockets for storage
    • Top opening is adjustable
    Cons
    • Tether is somewhat ineffective
    • No installation instructions available

    3. Large Basket

Heybike Mars 2.0 with Pet Accessories Review - Large Basket

Whether you have a pet or not, I highly recommend adding the Large Basket to your e-bike order.

This durable, metal basket attaches to the rear rack and can hold up to 120 pounds of cargo. This might be groceries, a cooler, or supplies for your dog. You can also secure the Pet Bike Basket inside or use it to transport a more secure small dog carrier.

The basket is available with a solid panel bottom or an open bottom. It’s about 18 inches long, 13 inches wide, and 6 inches high. It can be installed parallel or perpendicular to the rear rack.

I have found this basket to be very useful, both when I’m traveling with my pup and when I’m riding my bike alone. The only issues I ran into with it are that it did not come with installation instructions, and the hardware included does not fit well with the thicker bars of the Mars 2.0 rack.

    Pros
    • Versatile
    • Durable
    • Large capacity
    • Multiple installation options
    Cons
    • No installation instructions

Our Experience With Heybike Mars 2.0 with Pet Accessories

After spending some time with this bike and its fun pet accessories, my dog, Papyrus, and I found a lot to like about it, but also a few sticking points.

Let’s start with the beginning: the assembly.

I have assembled a few e-bikes now, and I can tell you none of them are that easy to put together, but I had an especially hard time with this one. It wasn’t so much that there was a lot to put together on the Mars 2.0; it was more that the instructions were lacking.

The bike came with no physical instructions, which meant I had to rely on a QR code and digital instructions on my phone. Since phone screens are quite small, I highly recommend using your computer instead. But even when I could see the directions, I felt some steps were missing, such as adjusting the handlebars and brakes.

On the plus side, Heybike did send all the wrenches and Allen wrenches needed for the assembly.

It took about an hour and a half, but I finally got the bike put together… only to discover that the disc brakes were rubbing. I searched everywhere for instructions on how to adjust them on the Heybike website, but found nothing, forcing me to reference various second-party YouTube videos.

The Large Basket and Pet Bike Basket also lacked instructions.I was able to figure out the pet basket after a few attempts, but I am certain that the hardware included with the Large Basket is not meant to secure it to the beefy Mars 2.0 rear rack. Luckily, it’s secure now, and that’s all that matters.

Once the bike was assembled, things got much more joyful!

This is a super powerful bike with fast acceleration, great features, and a durable build. The big tires make for a smooth ride on any terrain, and the Shimano 7-speed gear shift system and 1000-watt motor make it easy and speedy to get where you need to go.

As I mentioned above, I did find the acceleration from a stop and between PAC levels to be very jarring. It is also much speedier than I need. I have yet to use a PAC level higher than 2, even when going uphill.

Aside from those lurching liftoffs and PAC shifts, Papyrus was surprisingly happy in the pet basket. He seemed to really enjoy chilling and watching the world fly by. He also appreciated the adjustable opening, which helped keep him warm and secure at those higher speeds.

My only gripe about the Heybike Pet Bike Basket is that top-attached tether. If it were attached to the bottom of the basket, there is no way Papyrus could jump out. But because it’s attached high, he could potentially leap out and get stuck hanging there as we zoom down the trail.

But, again, if, like Papyrus, your dog is happy to sit still and go for a ride, this isn’t an issue.

Aside from the installation woes, I really love the Large Basket. It is great for hauling cargo of all types, has a huge capacity, and is a good alternative for transporting small dogs, whether in their carrier or in the Heybike Pet Bike Basket.

Overall, the Mars 2.0 is a seriously powerful bike with a capable battery and some wonderful pet accessories that make it an affordable and functional option for small dog owners who want to include their pup on their adventures.

    Conclusion

If you want to add more joy to your life and spend some time adventuring with your small dog, the Mars 2.0 e-bike from Heybike makes it possible.

This powerful and speedy bike is made for adventure with fat tires, a Shimano 7-speed gear shift system, a 1000-watt motor, and a 45-mile range. It is compatible with pet-friendly Heybike accessories, including the comfy and functional Heybike Pet Bike Basket and the versatile Large Basket cargo carrier. My senior Chihuahua loves riding around in his pet basket, and I love that I no longer have to leave him at home when I go biking.
