Tanner Park

August 24,2008

I found the runs to be larger then most runs on Long Island that I have been to. However, They are in full sun. Owners must be very careful on hot days. There is absolutely no shade for the dogs or people to cool off. Their is no water facility, no doggy bags, no garbage cans, no chairs to sit. It can't be considered a dog park, only two dog runs.

April 2009

Now that Spring is here, I tried the dog runs again. Their are issues here that need to be attended to:

First: The entrances to both runs are always flooded or thick with mud making it almost impossible to get into the runs. A couple of times it was impossible, and I had to leave.

Second: Trash can's Inside the runs are desperately needed. People are not cleaning up after their dogs at all!, because their is no place to put it. A sign over the Trash cans saying " Please Bring Your Own Plastic Bags" would be helpful too.

Third: Very Important! signs on the gates of each run specifying "Small Dogs Only" on the small run, and "Large Dogs Only" on the large run.

People are using the small dog run for their large dogs. Today I asked a man if he wouldn't mind using the large run for his pit bull, (their was two other dogs in the large run) He immediately became very angry and very hostile and started cursing me out,(very, very foul mouth) and threatened that he could let his dog tear my dog apart and eat her. This man knew he was in the wrong, and that is why he became so hostile. He also said that their is no sign that says he has to only use the large run. I told him he is right about the sign not being their, but every one who uses the dog runs and dog parks knows that their is a reason why they were set up with two different runs to begin with. While every other word out of his foul mouth was a foul word, he left in a huff and went to his car speeding out of parking lot. After he left, someone else came with two large dogs and was about to enter the small run. Luckily I picked up my dog in time and asked them if they too wouldn't mind using the larger run. Thank goodness they were much more polite about it and even said thank you for explaining it.

I do not want a confrontation with people again at this run. So until signs go up I will not be able to use it. I strongly advise other people to be on their guard their as well, since it is a desolate area.

Well the signs went up and the garbage cans and bags, and even a water faucet were all put into place in the beginning of the summer. Which is very much appreciated.. Now if they would just spray the grounds with some thing that is very safe for our dogs, I could enjoy going their again! It is infested with biting gnats and fleas!! You get eaten alive within the first 15 minutes of being in the dog runs! It doesn't seem to bother the dogs, probably because they have the flea preventative on them.
