Wonderful vet ER in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City vicinityMy human parents called the vet ER/hospital by the Eastern Iowa Airport (Cedar Rapids -- Eastern Iowa Vet Specialty Center - 841-5161) in December 2007. They were concerned because of the amount of dark chocolate I had ingested and my small size and what kind of chocolate I had eaten. The vet wanted me to come in as she was concerned about my size and the amount of chocolate I had eaten and wanted to make sure my heart wasn't rapidly beating. On the way to the vet, I had very unpleasant diarrhea. I continued to have diarrhea and vomiting up the chocolate and the vet monitored me and gave me fluids for dehydration. We were also sent home with medicinal charcoal to give me to help with absorbing what was left. It was a very tense, sleepless night, but I was feeling a bit better by morning and back to myself about 48 hours later. We were very impressed and pleased with the services we got at the pet hospital and the bill wasn't nearly as much as we thought it would have been -- under $200. The vet called a day later to ask how I was doing. This vet also tried to help save (via diet/fluids) my mom's boss' dog (an Airedale) who had a rare kidney disease -- sadly, tho, their dog passed away about a year ago). We all have high respect for this vet and would not hesitate to see her again -- Dr. Sarah Hansen (but it wouldn't surprise me if the other vets there were just as compassionate and knowledgeable). Note of caution to my fellow canines: DO NOT EAT CHOCOLATE! No matter how good it smells/tastes --- you'll be sorry you did (but you won't remember that the next time you get into it.) |
