Christmas Day in Hawaii...

We had some dark clouds and rain showers, but still a nice day. Cindy cooked ribs for dinner Christmas Eve and me n' Ellie got to crunch bones for almost an hour. Then we opened presents, and we got some really nice treats, and I got a new fleece bone toy. But the best part was Cindy really slept in this morning and me n' Ellie got to snuggle and get lots of back scratches and tummy rubs.

Then we went for a long, long trip to a park...and we got to really run off leash, totally running free. No concrete, no cyclone fences...when Cindy was unsnapping our leashes, she told me n' Ellie this was the day the dreams in quarantine came true, running free.

Merry Christmas to all!

Socialization class...

Cindy took me down to Petco today...they were having a class for doggies and it was about socialization and manners.

Gosh I wish I could talk her out of this stuff...first, I'm a terrier. I'm not supposed to like hardly anything else with fur on it. I love my big sister Ellie and she's good fun and company...fine, I don't need other doggies around me.

And what I really, really, don't like is them getting in my face. When I was back in the animal shelter, before Cindy's friends rescued me, they put me in this big pen with a bunch of way big dogs, and they were knocking me over and rolling me around like I was their own play ball or something...not hurting or biting but just treating me like a lower life form.

I never forgot that...I do not want other doggies getting in my space, especially running at me.

And there's no "Miss Manners for doggies" class that's gonna convince me otherwise. I just kinda sat under Cindy's chair the whole time and tried to mind my own business. I was sooooooooo happy when class was over and I got to go out to the car and be with Ellie again. I'm very happy with our little pack and I don't want any more classes...

In Honor of the Search Dog Foundation doggies...

Some of these dogs were in dog shelters, just like I was, once upon a time...til the Search Dog Foundation came and got them and trained them and their handlers, and now they are off doing life saving work in Haiti and other places.

These guys and gals, human and canine, are my heroes...I just want to honor them so I'm putting their picture on my web page for awhile.

Hail to the SDF!!!

The Humans have learned since Katrina...

When the humans on Hawaii were evacutaing for the Tsunami this past Saturday, the announcements said that pets could come if we were on leashes or in carriers.

Finally...they understand...if you want our humans to leave their homes from some catastrophe they have to be able to bring us or they arent' going.

Cindy said she saw a family in a minivan next to her at the gas station, when the lines were so long, with their little dog with them, they were all heading for the hills.

She offered them dog food but they said they had plenty.

Wow, I never thought I'd be happy going to the vet...but this new guy, our Hawaii vet Dr. Vance, is so cool. He doesn't make me feel like I'm being messed with, he just plays with me and we have a good time and it doesn't feel like "an exam..."

But I could tell he was checking me out...

Cindy told him about my left eye being kinda red and that she'd been washing it out for a few days but didn't think it was quite right, and you know, he looked really really hard and he found this tiny thing on my cornea and got it off with no trouble at all...and now my eye's feeling great and Cindy's not washing it out three times a day either.

Like I said, who thought I'd be happy to go see the vet?

A great idea to help rescue!!!

Big day at the dog park

Wow...

Never thought I'd be able to do this...but you know...with Cindy and Ellie's help, I actually ENJOYED a day at the dog park in Mililani.

Cindy n me n Ellie arrived and there were lots of doggies, all shapes and sizes, running around. I kept thinking back to the days in the dog "shelter" (why do they call it that?) when I was in that pen with all the big dogs who kinda ran over me and rolled me over...

I was kinda scared to be honest. And of course, we got met at the gate by all these doggies trying to do all this dog posturing stuff. But we got through. Then Cindy let Ellie go running off free, but kept me on leash with her.

That was fine with me. I didn't want anyone in my face or bugging me. So me n' Cindy walked all the way around the edge of the park. One or two kinda nice dog dudes came over to say hi, they were cool. No one else bothered me...and Ellie was having a ton of fun...then, to my surprise, Cindy unsnapped my leash.

"Good luck Barney, me n' Ellie are here for you."

I stood there a minute...wondering...and then went for it.

I ran around and met other doggies, sometimes ran back to Cindy...but it was okay.

And then this one big black dog came running really fast...I tried not to panic...just stood right by Cindy...then, from nowhere, Ellie cut him off...nice like and all, no growling or anything, she just cut him off and gave him one sniff and a big ole Keesie grin. I could hear her telling him "my bro doesn't like big dogs running right at him, so be cool, okay?"

And he was. He didn't run right at me ever again. Ellie set him straight.

Wow...I never knew she cared that much about me.

Way cool day. I'd still rather have the dog park to myself but it was okay. We had fun.

I may need more hedgehogs...

K, so Cindy went to the people vet last week...and I guess they had some not so good stuff to tell her cuz she came home and hugged me and Ellie really hard and said "they found another lump..."...and I remember last time this happened...Cindy went to the people vet an awful lot in a kinda short time...and she came home smelling like a vet's clinic...all mediciny and stuff...twice...

But then she was okay. But I guess we're gonna have to go through that again, and she's going to be kinda slowed down and woozy again...and stressed.

So me n Ellie are jumping all over this. We're gonna keep her spirits up and get her to laugh and make sure, very sure, that she plays more. And longer walks and lotsa time looking at sunrises and stars at night.

We got this.

But I might wear my hedgehog out, he's looking really beat up already.
