Birthday: June 3rd 2003 Likes: Playing with the Peeps & Pups. He loves seeing all of his Aunties and Unkies and he loves playing will all of his friends!! Pet-Peeves: Not being able to play with the cats. Favorite Toy: The one the other dog has, Jolly Balls, Kongs, and Nylabones!! Favorite Food: Everything!! but he only gets Canidae and the occasional treats. Favorite Walk: The one that takes him to Auntie Ann's, Auntie Tina's, Auntie Nancy's, Grandpa's Boat, and right now, anywhere he get to go in harness! Best Tricks: Emptying a bowl of all it's food in 5 seconds flat!! Since he is a guide dog in training he wasn't allowed to learn tricks, but his favorite commands is "jump". He loved to jump into the back of the truck or over a railing to "get busy." Arrival Story: We raised Voight as Puppy Raisers for Guide Dogs of America. We had him from the time he was 7 week until he was 17 months old. Bio: Voight was turned in for formal training to GDA on November 6th along with the other 7 from his litter (including Vienna, Vita, & Voyager) and his friends from the South Bay puppy raisers group, Tori and Wrigley along with his best friend Willow!!
Voight is now a Guide Dog and lives in Orange County with his new partner. We wish them both the best as they start their journey together. It's been forever since we heard anything... and then, last Monday, we got THE CALL. We did not expect it on a Monday, usually it is later in the week, but Louise called while we were at work. I had to run out of my building to answer the phone (mostly so I wouldn't squeal in front of my new coworkers). She told us that Voight has been matched as a working Guide Dog with a nice woman who lives in Orange County. She has an English Mastiff at home, and has had guides before. She and Voight will graduate together at GDA on July 31, at 10am. Needless to say, we are delirously happy, proud, everything. Thank you to everyone who supported Voight and us through this process.
Voight's sister Vienna, brother Voyager, and good friend Wrigley all graduated as working guide dogs May 1, 2005. There were over 20 dogs ready to graduate, and eight graduates. Voight's trainers Yvonne and Wendy told us that he could have graduated, but they did not find an "ideal" match. We will wait for him to have a perfect partner!!
Today we emailed the school and asked how Voight was doing, as we hadn't heard anything except that he was fine and not stressing in the kennels. Louise, head of the puppy department at GDA, emailed us back and said, "Voight is doing great - hanging in there!". That was exactly we needed to hear! We also heard from one of our fellow South Bay puppy raisers (thank you, Cathy!) who turned in her dog, Caleb, on Saturday. She said that Voight is kennelled with his friend Annika, and is two kennels away from his friend Willow. YAY!! So today we got LOTS of good news!! Let's continue to keep our paws crossed for Voight (and his friends Willow, Annika, Griffin, Fremont, and Caleb)!
