Well, I can't say I'm particularly happy with the newest development here at home. Seems the Burt is feeling more comfortable here. Seems the Burt is feeling more confident. Seems the Burt is feeling a bit more assertive.
Yesterday and today, when the Mom had the Burt and me Sit, Paw, Down for treats, the Burt made a move to shut me out from the treats!!!!!!!!! When the Mom says Sit, we both sit. When the Mom says Paw, we both give her paw, one paw on her hand, the other paw on her arm (she thinks it's kind of cute, and has been meaning to videotape it for Dogster).
But yesterday and today, when the Mom said Down, the Burt laid down IN FRONT OF ME!!! Between me and the TREATS!!!! The NERVE of some pups! The Mom just laughs and hands me the treat over the Burt's back. She and the Dad think this is just a WONDERFUL development!!! That's NOT the word I'd use...
Dixie Beep... you get the treat... they thinks its cute... where is the problem.?
Do the ''Queen'' bit and snile magnanimously !!!!!!!!!!!
As long as you get the treat first Burt will know that you what is his place in the pack. Mom and dad used to send mix signals, like giving a treat to Tippy before me and what happenedf ? Fights ! Mom read that you have to figure who's dog is the leader, always give him or her the treat first etc...etc..That way both dogs know their place in the pack and they both are happier. The other way? Both dogs feel insecure and it can become ugly. Here dad is first, mommy second, me third, Tippy fourth and Crouton is the last . I remember I chalenge mom for the second place one time and I can assure you that I will never try it again ! Oh my dog she was mad ! I think that your mom make the good thing by giving you the treat first when Burt chalenge you for your place.
I hope that everything will go well for both of you because a dog fight is really scary, ask mom ! ;o)
Biscotte is 100% correct when she said you should get the treat first - always. You need to remain the top dog of the dog pack so that you do not feel like Burt is taking over. Also entering and exiting any door, momma and daddy first then you and finally Burt. Burt should never be given anything first.
In regards to the paw in the human hand or on their arm, momma had a Chow mix and she learned how to do this and it gets annoying after a while. After Misty passed on momma got Logan Ben and he too learned to use his paws but again momma did not like it. Misty weighed about 70 pounds while Logan was 120. Both dogs had large paws and to have them taking their paws and clawing at you left welts, blood and other types of damage. Logan loved paw messages but when one went to quit he would take his paw and claw at you for more - cute yes, a good thing to do no. Momma will not let anyone teach us how to do the paw thing even though Puff and I have tiny paws.
Don't worry Dixie, Burt will realize who the ultimate princess of the house is. He's just gotta put on a good show for you and your mom. A guy has to try right? Even if he does know that the ladies run the house! ;) Just ask my dad!
WAY TO GO, BISCOTTE! NONE OF US WELL VERSED PUPS COULD HAVE SAID IT ANY BETTER.
BISCOTTE, DO YOU HAVE THAT ACCOUNT OF YOU CHALLENGING YOUR MOMMA IN YOUR DIARY?
WE MISSED THAT ONE!
BURT IS YOUNG. HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW HE FITS IN THE PACK STRUCTURE YET. WHEN HE IS A TEENAGER/YOUNG ADULT HE WILL MOSTLIKELY CHALLENGE THE STRUCTURE TO TRY TO MOVE UP RANK. MOST PUPS DO. DUKE DOES IT TOO FROM TIME TO TIME. BUT I LET HIM KNOW WHO IS HEAD HONCHO AROUND HERE. DON'T MESS WITH THE DUST!!! BOL!
Dear Ruby I don't think that I relate that in my diary because it was a long time ago before I was on Dogster. What happened was very simple. We all sleep in the same bed and mom is usually the last one going to sleep. One night she wanted to push me in the middle to go to sleep and I growled at her and try to snap her hand. Oh my dog ! She just shout a bad dog, took me by my collar and out of the room I was ! She closed the door and let me outside for the rest of the night . I whined at the door but she didn't let me come back in the bed that night. After that when mom wanted her place, I just move my behind from the spot she want. Sometimes she have to push me but not a sound is coming from me. :o) Now I am a good girl ! Tail wagging ! Biscotte
Oh, Biscotte, you were a testy little devil that night. Good thing you're Momma is so smart and did not back down or act afraid otherwise you would be top dog/owner. Not as fun as it seems. With great power comes great responsibility. You see how your Momma is always worrying about you...if you were Alpha you would have to worry and provide for your pack. That's alot of work. Best to be left to the humans. ;-) That way you can spend your free time having fun and relaxing.
Okay, so maybe I don't know your Momma, per se, but Momma's tend to act alike. Too much pressure for this lower ranking pup! Smile you're in the middle of the pack that's the fun place to be!
Thanks for sharing your story. We are all privileged to hear and learn from it!
Love and Licks,
I know how u feel Dixie, Sierra is always pushing her way in front of me. But you 'll have to learn to give a high five . Sierra doesnt know how but I do. Woof Woof
