Fruit Loops: A Progress Report

Fruity has been adopted!

Fruity-Pants: Week 2 (and a half)

So, we've now been fostering Fruit Loops for about 2 and a half weeks...

I have been walking him downtown alot and he loves it! He thrives on attention and wants everyone to meet him! Since we don't have children I'm not gonna say that he is definitely good with kids, BUT from what I've seen with him interacting with children around town he seems great! He will wiggle his little stump-tail constantly and give kisses! I do believe that he could be happy in a home with kids, since he has shown absolutely NO aggression with people at all! He is so sweet and snuggly...

The only issue is his male aggression. He gets really nasty with males when we're out on walks. We had an incident the other morning when a dog in the neighborhood came running loose out of a yard barking at the dogs. Fruity got so worked up and frustrated that he bit one of our dogs. It wasn't serious at all and they all calmed down, but I am dead set on him NOT going to a home with another male and any potential adopter should be aware of this issue. This means that he can not go to any dogparks or be off-leash where there might be other dogs. He will fight another male. We would highly recommend working with a trainer on this, and we do believe that with patience and consistency he can learn to behave around other males.

He had been showing signs of toy-possession so I've been monitoring that, but I am happy to report that it seems to have gotten better! maybe he is just more relaxed around our dogs now and more willing to share. Him and my female pug/JRT mix Bela got in to a scuffle last week over a toy and had to be separated, but this afternoon they were playing together no problem!

This doesn't mean that he might not be possessive with his toys, but we're being consistent with removing his toys as soon as he acts out (you don't behave you loose your privileges!), and repremands him for growling, but also reward him with praise and treats when he's being good, and we're working on his "drop it" command, since he loves to pull and it's not a good behavior for him. For any potential adopters we would suggest that they don't play tug-of-war with him, unless he has learned the "drop it" command perfectly!

He has been great in his crate! He loves to go in the crate at night and runs in there for his evening treat at bedtime! And he sleeps quietly through the night and will quietly cry in the morning when he wants to go to the bathroom...

I adore how he loves to snuggle up as close as he possibly can on the couch and put his head on your shoulder and fall asleep. He is such a loving and goofy dog, he makes me laugh every day!

Fruity: Week 1

So, we have now been fostering Fruit Loops for about a week and a half and have gotten to know him a bit better, and this is what we can tell you about him,

Fruit Loops is:

- 5 years old
- Purebred Boston Terrier
- 22 lbs, on the skinny side
- Housebroken
- Crate trained
- Missing his right eye
- Neutered, fully vetted and up-to-date on his shots

Fruit Loops was a stray in Greenville TX where he was picked up by Animal Control and brought to a local shelter where one of our amazing volunteers rescued him and he was brought to foster care in Maine. At some point he has damaged his right eye, and he has since had surgery and had the eye cleaned and removed and closed up, but it doesn't seem to bother Fruit Loops one bit!

Fruity, as we've been calling him, is a very friendly, affectionate, goofy and outgoing little guy who thrives on attention and snuggles! He knows no strangers and loves to go for walks, play with pretty much any toy, snuggle on the couch and give kisses! He lets me bathe him, clip his nails, clean his ears, clean his teeth, etc. He even fell asleep while I was taking out his stitches!

He is a quiet dog who doen't bark without reason, but will "talk" to you when you toss his toys for him. :)

He does not, on the other hand, get along with other male dogs. He has shown aggression with other males and we don't feel comfortable placing in a home with other male dogs. He's ok with our male, who is submissive, but we never leave them alone together. He has no issues with our two females.

Fruity would be happiest as an only dog, or with the right female dog. For any potential adopter that already have a female dog, we would require a meeting between the dogs prior to adoption. We just want to ensure the safety and happiness for all dogs involved.

We are developing a behavior management plan for Fruity to help him slowly learn to be relaxed around other males. We would be happy to help any potential adopters to continue this plan.
He is also learning basic obedience and is doing very well! He is very attentive and food motivated so he is learning fast...

All around he is an awesome little dog and we adore him! He will make someone an amazing friend and we'll be sad to see him go...
