Snowflakes & raked leaves~

First snow today!! Well, not really a snowstorm YET, but heavy flakes coming down while we're on our walk this afternoon! Mom's joyfully walking backwards trying to catch snowflakes on her tongue and giving thanks at the opportunity to enjoy snow....Dad's behind Mom & Socks grumbling something about finding a snow shovel...not sharing the joy of the first snow AT ALL with Mom. Then, we are passing by huge piles of raked leaves which Mom wanted SO BAD to fall into (like when they were kids), but Mr. Grumbles told her to forgeddaboutit and keep moving...HE was tired! OH, pardon moi, STOP THE WORLD...Dad's tired. Like Mom's not hurting, too, but loving the crisp cold weather and SNOWFLAKES!!! Either our Mom's a few bricks shy of a load or Dad's an old grouch. We're not sure here....but, it's time for dinner, so we're not gonna give it a whole lotta thought!

We Need to Brighten Up a Diamond!

We read this in Sunny Lee's diary about a 7 month old pup who was hit by a car, left at a vet, fixed up as much as possible, but now has paralyzed back legs and was abandoned by it's owners at the vet. The pup's name is "Diamond" and you can go say "hi" and see what you can do to help this little one recover.

From Sunny Lee's Diary:
"My friend diamond has her page up and running. Her rescue people have set up a site for pledges as she has "a long road ahead of her". Please go say Hi and make her your friend! Up til now, she's been a very lonely and sad doggie :( Let's help change that :)."

Here's where you can find "Diamond":

Thanks, Sunny Lee, for the heads up and letting us borrow your diary entry :)

PETLAND, Inc. is the Largest Seller of Puppy Mill Puppies in- the US!!

November 21st 2008 10:48 am

Today,we received this report from the Humane Society of the US (a 4 star rated charity by CharityNavigator.org, the international charity rating organization). We have been members of HSUS for many years and reports of all the wonderful work they do can be found at HSUS.org:

Today, The Humane Society of the United States released the results of a shocking investigation showing that pet store chain PETLAND INCORPORATED is the nation's largest retail supporter of puppy mills. Our national, eight-month investigation shows that Petland stores in multiple states are marketing dogs from cruel puppy mills to unsuspecting dog buyers. The investigation into PETLAND stores in Florida, Indiana, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, and other states revealed that many of the puppies sold at these stores came from massive commercial breeders in Missouri and other states in the Midwest where hundreds of breeding dogs are packed into filthy, crowded cages!

Most of the puppies bred at puppy mills are eventually sold over the Internet or through pet stores, including many PETLAND stores in the U.S. The unseen victims are the mother dogs who are forced to live their entire lives behind bars – without exercise, without socialization, without ever being part of a family or even seeing the outside of their cages.

Act locally by contacting a PETLAND franchise near you and tell them you are concerned about puppy mills!!

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle
President & CEO
The Humane Society of the United States

(We had to edit out some links because we didn't know how to put them in our diary), but you can visit HSUS.org to sign the petition to PETLAND or call/write any PETLAND stores in your area. PETLAND's website has a rebuttal of this report, slamming HSUS, but as we said before, HSUS is a 4 star (highest) rated charity from CharityNavigator.org...check 'em out!

We're so upset about this awful report and want to do everything possible to make PETLAND cease and desist from selling puppy mill puppies!

"Just a Dog"...you'll LOVE this!

JUST A DOG...

From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog."

They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog."

Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.

Because of "just a dog", I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog", but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man or woman."

So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog" just smile... because they "just don't understand."

(We loved this so much we borrowed it from St. Nickolas' page with gratitude for such a moving poem!)

Before I was a Dog Mom: I made and ate hot meals unmolested; I had unstained, unfurred clothes; I had quiet conversations on the phone, even if the doorbell rang.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I slept as late as I wanted and never worried about how late I got to bed . . . or if I could get into my bed.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I cleaned my house everyday, I never tripped over toys, stuffies, chewies, or invited the neighbor's dog over to play.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I didn't worry if my plants, cleansers, plastic bags, toilet paper, soap or deodorant were poisonous or dangerous.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I had never been peed on, pooped on, drooled on, chewed on, or pinched by puppy teeth.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I had complete control of my thoughts, my body and my mind. I slept all night without sharing the covers or pillow.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I never looked into big, soulful eyes and cried. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop a hurt. I never knew something so furry and four-legged could affect my heart so deeply.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I had never held a sleeping puppy just because I couldn't put it down. I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was well. I didn't know how warm it feels inside to feed a hungry puppy. I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment, or the satisfaction of being ... A Dog Mom

ISN'T THIS THE SWEETEST THING?!

From Hannah's Mom:

Hello to all my pals. I have a favor to ask. Care2 is holding a shelter contest. The prize is $10,000.00. Would you please copy and paste this link and vote for Southern Cross German Shepherd Rescue Group. They are in Clarksville Georgia. Without this wonderful group, Phoenix, Atticus or my fursis Hannah would not be here. This would help Atticus so much. He still needs over $4,000.00. Thank you all so very much. Love to all!!

Time is Running Out...PLEASE HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR IMHA- RESEARCH BY JANUARY 1, 2009!!

December 15th 2008 11:52 pm

If you take action NOW by simply corralling 3 dogs (listed below) there's a chance to raise $1,000 for Mica's IMHA Research Fund...you don't have to donate (though donations are welcome)...ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TAKE A
FEW MINUTES OF TIME TO CORRAL "Mica the Wonderpup", "Mirra" & "The Purple Girls of Oregon"...that's it! IF enough pups do this, Mica's Research Fund could win $1,000. Here are links to the pages of pups needed to be corralled....PLEASE, IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO NOW:

http://www.dogster.com/dogs/504880 ANGEL MICA - the wonderpup

http://www.dogster.com/dogs/581776 MIRRA

http://www.dogster.com/dogs/718265 The Purple Girls of Oregon

As many of you know, Mica lost her battle with IMHA in a short amount of time. In her memory, a fund has been established for research on this deadly disease. You can help Mica's Foundation and it won't cost you a cent (unless you choose to donate). All you have to do is go to 3 Dogster sites and corral EACH of them (listed below), and you only have to do it once! The more times Mica, Mirra & The Purple Girls of Oregon are corraled, the higher their chances of winning the funds (from a generous don0r) for IMHA research.

BUT, THERE'S A DEADLINE ON THIS!

NOW, we have LESS THAN A MONTH to help win $1,000 for Mica's IMHA fund, if we all work together we can do this! It ends midnight on JANUARY 1, 2009, that's the donor's day to decide what cause gets much needed funds (which Dogster's page(s) have been corralled the most...Mica, Mirra & The Purple Girls of Oregon combined). WE CAN DO THIS IF EVERYONE IS WILLING TO HELP (for ALL our beloved dogs' sake...it can affect cats as well!)

Mica's *IMHA RESEARCH FUND is promised $1,000 if Mica, Mirra & THe Purple Girls of Oregon's dog pages make the top 10 dog pages CORRALLED on DOGSTER & half that amount if Mica & Mirra combined succeed.

IT COSTS NOTHING...ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GO TO EACH OF THESE THREE DOGSTER PAGES, ADD THEM TO YOUR CORRAL & YOU'VE HELPED FIGHT THIS TERRIBLE DISEASE!! PLEASE, TAKE A MINUTE OR TWO AND DO IT TODAY...SO MANY PUPS MIGHT BE SAVED BY THIS RESEARCH...including YOURS!!

http://www.dogster.com/dogs/504880 ANGEL MICA - the wonderpup

http://www.dogster.com/dogs/581776 MIRRA

http://www.dogster.com/dogs/718265 The Purple Girls of Oregon

THANKS TO EVERYPUP WHO CORRALS THESE THREE PUPS AND HELPS RAISE THE FUNDS FOR IMHA RESEARCH! Of course, donations would be gratefully accepted (details on donations are on Mica's page), but if you can't donate, please just to corral these three...free & easy and very possibly LIFE SAVING. God Bless you real good for helping!!

A Poem of Hope....

Our dear friend Angus the Warrior sent us this beautiful poem of hope in the darkest of times and we wanted to share it with all:

The Darkling Thrush -- Thomas Hardy

I leant upon a coppice gate
When Frost was spectre-gray,
And Winter's dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.
The tangled bine-stems scored the sky
Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
Had sought their household fires.

The land's sharp features seemed to be
The Century's corpse outleant,
His crypt the cloudy canopy,
The wind his death-lament.
The ancient pulse of germ and birth
Was shrunken hard and dry,
And every spirit upon earth
Seemed fervourless as I.

At once a voice arose among
The bleak twigs overhead
In a full-hearted evensong
Of joy illimited;
An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,
In blast-beruffled plume,
Had chosen thus to fling his soul
Upon the growing gloom.

So little cause for carolings
Of such ecstatic sound
Was written on terrestrial things
Afar or nigh around,
That I could think there trembled through
His happy good-night air
Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew
And I was unaware.

Isn't this the lovliest poem? We thank dear Angus and his Mom so very much for sharing it with us!

OMD, Socks is SO happy with the beautiful new pink fur lined jacket that Dixie Black Pearl sent her (we received it right before it started raining for days on end). We put pix on our page of how pretty Socks look in it! That was SO pawsome of Dixie & her Mom. Keeps Socks so dry & warm (great for her not getting soaking wet & warm for her arthritis)!

She's also now sleeping in our precious angel Buddy's bed (we got it new just before we lost him in 2005). It's got a special orthopedic pad in it and she loves it...we can hardly pry her out of it 'cause it must feel so good to her old bones (Buddy would like that 'cause Socks was his best friend all through his too short life).

Hope everyone's enjoying the holiday season!
