Arrival Story:
Julie came to the Willamette Humane Society to look at a bunch of famous poodles who had been seized in bad circumstances. Apparently she knew their dad. She was looking for someone to be Pico's apprentice and learn to be a service dog. They started adopting poodles at 10:30am, but the shelter didn't open 'til noon. When the shelter opened, Julie and one other lady who was also waiting to meet the poodles asked if they could go look at the other dogs in the kennel to see if there were any non-poodles who might be good matches for them. The other lady wanted a small dog, but Julie wanted a dog who had a good temperament test and some other stuff that would make a good candidate for a service dog. I got all A's on MY test and all the other info about me and my behavior in the kennel were promising. She asked to meet me and some other dogs. When she got to me, I showed off my advanced skills at calming signals, which impressed her and convinced Pico that even if she wasn't sure she LIKED me, she could relax around me. After that, Julie didn't need to see any more dogs. She asked if we could go over near the rabbit room to make sure that I'd be okay with her bunny. We went to the rabbit room, and they sure smell good, but I was a gentleman. So Julie said she'd like to adopt me. I don't know what a service dog is supposed to do, but I like the idea of having a job. My old people didn't understand that I got bored just sitting around all day, so I'd chew up stuffed animals. What else was a supposed to do? But a job sounds good!
