1 Day Post Op...

Thanks to everyone for the continued show of love and support.... we'd be lost without you all!!

Emma did fine through the night.... she amazes me every single day.... no matter what this tiny baby has to face - she always tries to do it smiling and with wide eyed wonder............ she has such an awesome spirit.....

She still looks a mess..... and LOOKS like she should be in excruciating pain.... but she hasn't so much as uttered a whimper. She was bouncing around at 3am wanting to play!

I think the anesthesia still has a bit of a hold on her - and in between bursts of energy and excitement - she's still sleeping a lot..... but she doesn't act like she's in terrible pain - - - - I'm sure it's sore to open her mouth... so rather than cover my face with licks n' kisses, she's been pushing her lil' twisted muzzle to my nose and cheeks - - nuzzling into my neck....

She's on some light pain meds as well as an antibiotic.

I can tell the whole thing feels a little different to her - - - she'll kind of stick her tongue out and hold her mouth open for a couple seconds... then just shake it off and go about playing.

She's doing quite a bit of "snuffing" - - blowing out through her nose - - - I'm guessing there's still some blood and fluid in there.

I still have some concerns - but I'm watching her closely...

Right now I'm just trying to keep her hydrated.... she, understandably - doesn't want anything to do with eating or drinking - so I'll continue persuading her to take water, pedialyte and STAT (high calorie liquid diet) via the syringe until she is ready to try something on her own.

I'm just praying that the repaired palate remains in tact and that the nasal passageways are functional (I'm really unsure about that part). The lip looks very tightly pulled so I'm hoping that things will loosen up so that she will be able to drink and breathe normally.

She'll never have teeth in the front where the cleft was.... because there is no bone there.... so I don't have to worry about the lip curling down and becoming irritated by the teeth poking / scraping.... but I want the entire mouth and nose to allow for as much proper function as possible.

I have posted some photos on Emma's Myspace blog...

These photos are not for "shock value" and I really hesitated posting even the DAY AFTER SURGERY photos.... I still have not convinced myself to post the "during surgery" photos or video....

She's still in her jammies because I haven't wanted to pull them up over her head for fear of hurting her.

I sent photos to a couple people.... who then, evidently sent them on to others or posted them somewhere - - because I've already received cruel spirited emails saying "look on the bright side, now she can enter the World's Ugliest Dog Contest" and "she looks like that guy who peeled his face off in Silence Of The Lambs"....................... and okay, yeah...... maybe she does.................. in fact, in one of the pictures............. she REALLY does........... and I've cried a million tears............. but the fact remains - if Emma is a FUNCTIONAL pup.... I could care less what she LOOKS like............. to me, she will always be BEAUTIFUL!!

We got some comments and remarks from people in the lobby when leaving the hospital yesterday..... a couple of "Oh my God"'s and "Poor babyyyyy what happened to her faceeeeeeeeee?" ..... so I guess we'll just have to get used to that.... (I'm sure getting a good lesson of what parents of cleft CHILDREN endure!!)

All in all, I'm grateful that she will soon be eating on her own and moving past all this.

Home From The Hospital....

First of all..... WE LOVE YOU ALL!!!

We're both pretty worn out from the day (Em moreso than me) but it's going to be another very long night...

We're home................ and the Doc says that the surgery was successful .... the palate looks to be in good shape.

The face............ well.............. it took a lot to repair the palate.... =(

I have dozens of photos and lots of video..... I haven't decided whether or not to post them... they are extremely graphic.

We had some "issues" throughout the day.... but she SURVIVED....... and hopefully will be eating normally in a few days.

I'm a little worried about her yet tonight, so please continue with all the prayers you can spare....

Thank you, as always............. we couldn't have gotten through ANY of the past 6 months without the love and support of our friends!!

Will post more later..............

Much love...

Mornin' everyone!

I want to thank you all for the comments, emails, phone calls, prayers and good thoughts sent our way! They really do mean SO MUCH!!

I know that there are so many furs and families out there going through far worse health issues than Emma is.... we've been very lucky to that she's been such a strong little girl... and it just means the world to us that you all have been carrying her in your hearts for so long!!

Please continue sendin' up the prayers for Emma and for our friends Gidget and Minnie Moo who will also be having surgical procedures today....

I will try to post updates to the blog here via my cell phone if I am able to hold a connection from the hospital.

Otherwise, I'll post when we are home and Emma is all tucked in and comfortable.

We love you all!!!

Heading Into Surgery.........

Well.... I just heard from Emma's surgeon and she has decided to go ahead and move forward with Em's surgery to repair the cleft of the hard palate...... we are set for TOMORROW!!!! *shudder*

I am pretty nervous, but Emma is doing well..... solid and strong! So we're just praying that all goes well and she recovers quickly.

Emma will be six months old (24 weeks) on Monday and is weighing in at about 28 ounces.

We'll be getting over to the hospital tomorrow morning around 10:00am and in to surgery by 10:30'ish.

I'm not sure yet, if the hospital will want to keep her overnight or not - but I will provide updates here as often as I can.

I am blessed to be able to get to go into surgery with Emma - and will be taking photos and a little bit of video as I am able, without getting in anyone's way. I will share those here once Emma is home and settled.

Thanks to all of our friends, who continue to pray and send good thoughts!!

Lots and lots of love!!

Stuffies & Crayola Activity Items For Kids!!

We pray that you all are enjoying many blessings as we quickly move into this - a brand new year!!

For those of you who do not yet know of Baby Emma and her plight, please feel free to view our profile and follow the links below.

Some of you may be aware of the many charity projects that we continue to organize to benefit children around the country!

Our current project - Emma's Toy Box - kicked off mid December! We are collecting stuffed toys and Crayola items / activity packs which are being, and will continue to be provided to children suffering with cleft palate / craniofacial conditions locally & around the country all throughout the year!

The stuffed toys need not be new - but because many will be going to hospitalized children and those suffering from a compromised immune system - they must be very clean and in good condition with no rips, tears or stains. We are currently requesting ONLY STUFFED animals and toys. (no metals/plastics, etc. please).

These will all be professionally cleaned before distribution so don't worry if you see a tiny spot or something, we'll take care of that.

We do ask that the Crayola items be in new / unused condition. Any Crayola products are welcome - - we are sticking with the Crayola brand only. We are looking for crayons, markers, colored pencils, the neat new activity packs - "Color Wonder", "Color Explosion"... any of those type of activity kits.

Here is a link to the Crayola Store Online for anyone interested. They offer free shipping on orders over 75.00 and you can get a new customer code for 15% off your first order when you register as a member at x.asp?NAV=HOME

If you are able to help out with even a single stuffed toy or coloring book, please do! We welcome any and all efforts to aid these amazing kids!

You may send items to:

Emma's Toy Box
c/o Dena Lamkin
2801 SW 83rd St.
Oklahoma City, OK 73159

Please include a return address as well as your Dogster ID so that we may send you a proper thank you!!

Thank you in advance for your support!

All the best to you!

Hi everyone!!!

Well, here is our furfamily "Year In Review"...

This showing is a bit of a pain in that in order to get the "full experience" you can't just let it play on it's own... you have to pause each page and click through each photo before moving on to the next page. (otherwise you miss all of Gracie's good "narratives"! ha!)

We wish you all the most wonderful blessings in the coming New Year!!!

Much love to you all!!

Hi everyone!

Mom is putting together a database of our certified pet therapy friends across the country.

These contacts will be used for a particular project in the future.

We are trying to figure out the workings and procedures for attaining our federal not for profit corp. status and have lots of plans in the works!

If you are working on, or have attained your certification, please contact Mom and let us know that you'd like to be included in upcoming therapy projects!

For now, we're just gathering information....

Thanks and love to you all!!

Lazyyyyyy Mommy......

We hope you all had a BEAUTIFUL Christmas holiday!!!

Everything here at our house has begun to quiet down a little... we've finished up with all of our care packages to the soldiers - - our Christmas Paws gifts to our special needs fur friends - - and our own family holiday stuffs..... so now me n' Mom have started to get really LAZY!!! =) (I think I loveeeeeeeeee lazy!!!) *sniffs n' wiggles*

We want to thank everyone so much, who sent all of the wonderful holiday cards!! Mom says the mailman thought she had a new skin person who moved in, since all the mail was for ME this year!!!

Mommy says that I am fast becoming a young lady.... today, I am 21 weeks old!! That's FIVE MONTHS and ONE WEEK OLD!!! WOWZA!!!

Mom says that I've gotten very long and a little taller, but I still only weigh about one and a half ounces more than I did three weeks ago. So now I am just a tiny bit over 26 ounces!!

I think that's BIG......... but Mommy says she was really hoping that I would grow to be two pounds before I had my next big surgery.

The last time Mom talked to the dogtor, she said that she wanted to do the surgery just before Christmas or just after the first of the year. But since I still wasn't 2 lbs yet before Christmas, Mom said she wanted to wait until the latter date in hopes that I'd have some kinda' miraculous "growth spurt".... no such luck!!

I was 'posta' get my rabies vaccination when I got my final round of puppy vaccinations a couple weeks ago but Mama told the dogtors "no way" - that I was still WAY too little for that...... so we skipped it!! BUT, the hospital says that I HAVE to have my rabies shot before I can go in to have my surgery.... so I think Mom n' me are gonna' go do that on Thursday. *sigh* I just HATE shots!! *stomp x's four*

But at least it will be over .... and I won't have to have those kinda' shots for a whole year!

In case you were wondering, I still can't eat food by myself.... which was kinda' no fun over the holidays since everyone was talking 'bout all the nummy eats all over the place!! My Yorksiblings kept chattering about turkey and gravy and all sortsa' treats they got..... and I didn't get nuffin'!!

Mom did let me try a few licks of a peppermint, which was soooooooooooo great!!

Mom still feeds me my formula / wet food mixture with a syringe every 3 or 4 hours. And I still get water with a syringe - what seems like ALL the time. I can't WAIT till I can dive into a bowl of turkey and gravy all by myself!!

Me n' Mom have been collecting stuffed teddies n' toys for other cleft kids lately. We've had some local people donate some and Mom has been to all the thrift stores collecting dozens more!

It's been such fun meeting the new people!! Mom takes me to some of the houses when we go pick up toys and I get to meet some of the very special donors!!

Go to my myspace blog to see pictures of some of the wonderful people who donated toys on one particular pick up day! And just a FEW of the stuffies we picked up that day!

Emma's Myspace Page
We're hoping to be able to take the stuffies to the cleft kids down at the craniofacial clinic after my surgery when we get to go - - - and we've also been sending them to our cleft friends all over the country!

Mom says that she would really like to start a not for profit corp. that would help children with facial deformities like mine.... but that's a BIG JOB and we don't know how we'd do it on our own. She says we don't know nuffin' 'bout that kinda' stuffs - so we'll just have to see 'bout that.

In the mean time, Mom says we'll just keep doin' what we're doin' and keep tryin' to help as many skin & fur kids as we can - just the way we've been doin' it.... with YOUR HELP!!! =)

I love you all so very much!! Thank you for continuing to share your love and support with me!!

*wiggles, sniffs n' puppy breath licks*

Love, Emma
