Arrival Story:
I saw a posting on chowchow.org from aarsociety.org seeking a foster mom for a blind chow needing medical attention who had spent his entire life on a short chain. His owners were going to dispose of him. Having had a blind chow myself, I thought myself up to the task of caring for this special needs pup and volunteered. Teddy has been through a lot and will still need entropian surgery. Thanks to American Animal Rescue Society, he is alive and happy in his forever home.

Teddy's Eye Surgery

November 11th 2007 12:20 pm   [link to this entry]

I got my eye surgery on Friday. It wasn't too bad except they wouldn't let me eat almost all day long!!! Mom is still giving me pain meds so it doesn't hurt, but it does feel funny.

She cleans my eyes and puts medicine on them twice a day. I don't really like that but she gives me a biscuit when she is done so I sit pretty still waiting.

My fur is growing in nicely, and you can see where I'm going to have lighter areas. I still have to wear a coat to stay out in the cold and patrol the yard. I just keep going around the perimeter to make sure it is secure from cats, squirrels, and rabbits. I've learned to come inside to sleep and don't take naps outside anymore. I like the soft doggie beds in the house (one on each floor).

I think Cinder is learning to like me. When I came home on Friday after the day at the vet, I think I heard her tail wagging when she gave me one big lick on the face and then went to the kitchen to see if we were going to get our dinner.

Please help American Animal Rescue Society (www.AARSociety.org) help more dogs like me. Donate to help cover all my medical bills.

Update

October 31st 2007 4:52 pm   [link to this entry]

I'm having a great time at foster mom's house. Did you know that if you "sit" when humans tell you to, they often will give you food they call a treat? I'm getting really good at this "trick".

I got my stitches out and don't have to wear that silly funnel on my head any more!

Foster dad is softening up a little; he gave me a rawhide bone to chew on.

Cinder and I are getting along well. I sleep on my doggie bed and she sleeps next to me on a rug (she doesn't like doggie beds, silly girl).

Thanks to my foster parents and AARS for rescing me.

Please donate to American Animal Rescue Sociey at www.AARSociety.org.

Medical Bills

October 25th 2007 4:39 pm   [link to this entry]

I was in pain, blind, tick infested, unaltered and unvacinated when American Animal Rescue Society took me in.

The first thing they did was take me to the vet, where I got all my shots (yuck), was neutered (huh?), was tested for heartworm and fecal parasites (negative on both!!!!), and was bathed and shaved to get the ticks removed.

That same day I went to my foster mom's house and I got to sleep in the house for the very first time. I cried a lot so she "slept" on the floor next to me, holding me all night.

The next day I kept crying and trying to lick my stitches. My skin all turned pink, I had some oozing spots, my incision had become inflamed and I hurt. I was screaming, spinning in circles and scooting my butt across the floor, inconsolable. Foster mom rushed me to the emergency vet as it was after hours. They gave me a sedative to calm me, a hefty dose of benadryl to calm down the razor burn which had become more and more evident as time passed. They put this goofy collar on me that Cinder says looks like I'm wearing a funnel and foster mom brought home lots of meds for me. (It was a very expensive visit.) I slept a little better that night. And by morning I was even ready to eat some breakfast.

A couple days later I went back to the vet and got some pain medicine, more antiinflammatories and a recheck.

I still need surgery to fix my eyelids. They turn in and my eyelashes rub on my eyes, it hurt all the time until I got the pain medicine. The vet wants to wait till my incision is healed because of all the trouble I've had. They call it entropian surgery and it will run $380-550.
