Arrival Story: One Saturday, after looking online for several weeks, I went to an Animal Shelter with Debbie. On my way to Deb's, I was so nervous, excited. I just knew today was the day I was bringing home a new family member! I very much trust Deb's advice & judgement on dogs. We took the husky in the yard for a run & Deb touched her all over - feet, rear, tail, mouth, teeth & not a flinch from the husky. She loved playing with other dogs in the yard. Very healthy looking. This is the one! (Deb later told me that if I hadn't taken her, she would've and her hubby and 2 other dogs would've had to just accept it.) :)
So I handed in my application and a little while later, we were on our way with the new pup! I named her Leika later that night. It means "play" in Icelandic.
Bio: Leika was in the shelter for about 3 months. A few days after I brought Leika home, I found out that she had been adopted just before I got her, but brought back because she and "her brother" had a severe/possibly dangerous "pack mentality" between them. They had jumped a 6 ft fence at their 1st adoptive home. Her "brother" had already left the shelter for the 2nd time when I found Leika. Apparently, he was the leader, leading Leika to do naughty acts. The shelter said she shouldn't live with other dogs, which she doesn't, but she LOVES playing with other dogs! If I had a better home set-up (bigger yard w/ high fence), I would definitely get another Sibe for Leika.

I am excited to be participating in the 2008 Tails on the Trails fundraiser sponsored by Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue, Inc. (TOTTSHR). I will spend the morning hiking to help Siberian Huskies. As an added bonus, there is a good chance that I may even win a great prize for the most money raised. Last year, I brought Leika to this event to get her microchipped. She even got to try mushing! This year, Leika and I will be celebrating our 1st year together (a month late). She came home with me on August 18, 2007.
Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue, Inc. (TOTTSHR), is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization comprised of volunteers throughout PA, MD, NJ, DE, WV and NY who dedicate their time and effort to rescuing Siberian Huskies and Siberian Husky mixes from shelters, abusive homes, or owners who can no longer properly care for their dogs. Their goal is to place these dogs in loving homes and to educate people about the characteristics of this often misunderstood breed. They have proven their success with the placement of more than 700 dogs in permanent homes since April 2000.
On September 20, 2008, TOTTSHR will hold its 6th annual Tails on the Trails at Warminster Community Park in Warminster, PA. Tails on the Trails 2008 will consist of a fundraising hike as well as many activities including a picnic, silent auction, microchip clinic, mushing demonstration and CGC testing.
