Arrival Story:
My fiance and I visited our local pound on a miserable cold and wet day two years ago. We had thought about fostering a dog for the short term and had heard about Mars via the animal shelter's website. Suddenly, out of the rain came this poor bedraggled volunteer jerking along behind Mars. This happy looking rotweiler/terrier/Sheppard mutt had a ton of energy, but the oddest back leg wobble (we now refer to it as his super-model wobble). He slunk straight up to me, turned his back and sat on my feet. I couldn't move. He just sat there, all 60 soaking pounds of him and completely ignored me. We were told that he was about to be put down as he had a nasty hip disorder. The problem had lead to him being returned by a couple of other foster homes as well as his original owner. We took him home having been warned that his symptoms would worsen as the weeks progressed and that he'd have to be put down in the near future. He was having a hard time lifting his hind-legs high enough to get himself up onto the curb. A week later and he was running up and down the two flights of steep stairs in our house. The "ten minute" walks that he was supposed to have were up to half and hour. Then he started jumping. He was literally bouncing around in excitement whenever we returned home, or when returned to a room seconds after we'd left it! We got a second opinion from another vet and were told that Mars the wonder-mutt was perfectly healthy. He had an unusual set of corgi-like hips for such a big rotweiler. Exercise and a good diet was all that was needed. We adopted him permanently the next day. He's such a huge part of our life that when it came time to make our first feature film, we cast Mars in the title role! The film is called a frighteningly funny comedy called A Dog's Breakfast.
