Birthday: February 1st 1998 Likes: Anything NEW, New Toys, New Foods, New People, New Dogs, New Places, and Especially New Foster Dogs! I also do appreciate some repeats such as going to the beach, being with mom, traveling with mom, swimming, and ALL BREAD products such as bagels. Pet-Peeves: Pandora having ANY fun, Riding in the monster Tundra Van, other dogs playing with MY toys, and Left Overs. Favorite Toy: Any squeaky furry toy that another dog has, otherwise most days it is her Pet Stick, Pet Rock, her plush husky. Favorite Food: Pizza, Bagels, Wendy's French fries, all Italian food with tomato sauce! Favorite Walk: Anywhere near water that isn't rushing at her... such as a bay. In particular I LOVE Lake Nockamixon. Best Tricks: BANG (3 turns and plays dead), gives paw, stay, down, and on occasion will come on command, but never reliable. Arrival Story: It all began with the dad of the house... he ALWAYS wanted a Siberian Husky. And my Momma? Well she grew up with loveable mutts and rescued Greyhounds. All I know is that I was the first husky for both of them.. and I have made SURE I will never be forgotten! So how did I get here with them? Here is how the story goes... It started with the two of them.. they weren't quite ready for a dog yet. One night they went to the pet store and they were just "looking." And there I was... cute as can be! I knew they had been preparing for their first dog as they rolled me on my back and tested me with shake cans and noises. What they didn't know was that I read the same book! I could tell I was just SUCKING them RIGHT IN!!! Batting my pretty eyes at them. I turned on the WORKS! It was a Friday night and they looked sooo sad as they left me in the store that night. I knew they'd be back, and I was right! As the lights went on in the pet store and everyone began to bustle around, I heard my new momma's voice yelling that she wanted the husky puppy. That was me!! And so the fun began... One thing is for sure.. I am NOTHING like I pretended to be with their silly evaluation test!
I am now one of four huskies and I also help to teach many other dogs about being loved too. I have made a TON of new friends over the years by helping to foster for Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue. I even taught my parents lots about what huskies are all about. They have even used many of my antics to help teach other folks about huskies. I know they feel bad sometimes about buying me from a pet store and supporting puppy mills... but I know they'd do it again for me! Hopefully one day there will be no more yucky puppy mills. I guess somethings just happen for a reason, and I am happy to be here and helping them find homes for other pups in need and helping to educate with TOTTSHR! Bio: The Autobiography of Nika. Let me start out by telling you that I am wonderful, amazing, beautiful, and of course... SMART. I have taught my humans a LOT over the years. Some of my most important lessons have included that huskies: dig, eat things that our humans don't necessarily want us to, shed.. a lot and often, we test your patience, we are STUBBORN, we LOVE to run and run and run, we have NO FEAR and will get hurt by things likes cars, we have selective hearing, did I mention we shed?, despite what some think we are very smart, did I mention we RUN with no regard for our own safety?, some of us can jump fences, climb fences, fit through tiny holes, did I mention how we are very sweet when we want to be, we LOVE kids and people, we LOVE to PLAY with other dogs, some of us can OPEN DOORS, you name it.. most likely a husky has done it. I lucked out and found a home that put up with all Sibe-ness. We are beautiful, but we are NOT for everyone. If you think you want a husky like me, please read these pages and see photos of Siberians being.. well Siberians. And if you want to see more of me then click here. So what else is there to say about me except that I have been an EXTREMELY picky eater over the years. If you think you have seen a picky eater? Well I take it to a new level. So a few years ago my momma introduced me to something they call the "RAW diet." I call it "about time!" At first I tried to make them think I hated it.. but actually it was the best. And so now I eat turkey, chicken, deer.. and the list goes on. The bottom line is that I get LOTS of variety and I LOVE IT! I have some good links listed here if you want your human to learn more about the RAW diet. And I also have a list of some really good homemade dog treats to tell your humans about here. That is about it. Only thing left to say is check out my diaries often to learn what's new with me. Because it is ALL about The Nika.. OF COURSE!!! Forums Motto: It's ALL About The Nika! In Latin it means "Belonging to the Lord."
As the time ticks away until we say goodbye to our Nika girl, I can't help but think about how many things she has taught us and others. For those who don't know.. Nika was our first Siberian and the one that was the inspiration for many of the stories on the Tails of the Tundra site. Actually.. her fluffy tail is the model for the tail on the logo too. She will be only a few months shy of her 15 birthday.. but it is never enough.
Nika's appt is scheduled for late in the day this Thursday in our home- where Christine a good friend to Nika will be her vet tech.
To all our Husky Heaven friends of The Dogster Thank you for all the wonderful reminders of how many people Nika has touched and inspired.
