Arrival Story:
I was looking on the internet one night and saw an ad for a seven year old Collie that had been turned over to a rescue shelter. Her previous owners said she had become infested with ticks, and they were unable to get rid of them. The animal shelter decided to shave her fur in hopes of ridding her from the pesty blood suckers. So here was this beautiful, older dog, but she was furless. I called and asked what we needed to do to get her. They asked for a vet reference and told us to come pick her up. We told them it would be the next day as we lived 90 miles away and couldn't come that evening. They called our vet that night for a reference and called back saying we were approved. So the next day we drove the 90 miles to pick "Lady" up. She was so pretty and so calm. My kids fell in love with her, and she readily played with them. We signed the paperwork, paid the fees, and left with Lady in tow. We went to PetsMart before leaving town to buy her a few goodies. After about an hour and a half we were on our way home. My cell phone rang. I answered and it was the lady that had been over Lady's case. She said that she had not realized that it was against policy to adopt to anyone that lived more than 40 miles outside of city limits and we'd have to bring her back immediately. I started crying and handed my husband the phone. When he started talking to her she said if we refused to bring her back they would press charges and send the police to pick her up. Relunctly and with a broken heart we took her back. My daughter and I cried the entire hour and a half drive home. I had promised her a dog and a dog she was going to get. The next morning I got online bright and early to check the classifieds. Lo and behold a family in the next town over had a litter of golden retriever pups. I called and got information, told the guy what had happened and he said that he had three pups left, and we were welcome to come look. I hung up and began talking to my husband and this man called back and told us he'd let us have a puppy for $50 if we wanted it. We drove over to look. I was still disappointed and shocked over what had happened the previous day, but who doesn't get excited over puppies? They were so cute and cuddly!! Rhett walked over and started chewing on my pants leg. I bent over and picked him and didn't put him down again until we were home! I hope that Lady did find a good home (within the 40 mile restricted area!), and that she is loved as much as we would have loved her. But if that hadn't have happened, we wouldn't have Rhett. And I'm so thankful for him!

Bio:
When we brought Rhett home I was still disappointed over not getting the Collie. I decided he was the kids dog and I'd feed him and take him out to potty, but I wasn't going to get attached! Rhett had other ideas, and it didn't take him long to win me over!!! Now I wonder how I ever got along without him. He is all mine!!! He is so sweet, but also so goofy. Not a day goes by that he doesn't manage to make us laugh somehow. Though it is not generally characteristic for goldens to be protective, Rhett is very much so of me and my children. He is such a wonderful dog and has made my life better. You know, dogs aren't just man's best friend....they're women's best friends too. Rhett lost his battle with hip dysplasia in April '08. He was the best dog I have ever had. I miss him so much. He was so much more than a pet. He was my friend, my confidant, and beloved family member.************** It has been over a year since I lost my much loved friend, and I am continually amazed at how much I still miss him. He knew me inside out and loved being with me as much as I enjoyed his company. No other animal will ever take his place. Rhett left a huge void in my life that nothing else could ever fill.
