It is with a broken heart and many tears that I write to tell you that Autumn has crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge.
This afternoon I was taking her outside and she stumbled a little going out the door. This was not unusual for her as her hips had such bad arthritis.
I carried her to the grass and noticed that she could not use her left back foot. Because of that she was having great difficulty standing up. I immediately decided that I should take her to the vet.
They did x-rays, and her Daddy arrived just as the vet was getting ready to talk to me. The x-rays revealed that she had indeed fractured the femur just where it goes into the hip socket. The vet also said it appeared that she had bone cancer as the left bone (at the socket area) was very eaten away with cancer. The x-ray showed a large mass in her stomach area as well that was more than likely cancer.
Due to her age (almost 13), and the fact that the other hip was also in terrible shape, surgery was not really an option. The vet indicated that she was probably in quite a bit of pain.
It is a decision that no one ever wants to make, but there was really nothing else that could be done for her.
We went back and told her how much we loved her, how much the cats loved her. I could not bring myself to stay in there while they put her to sleep. Her Daddy stayed with her.
She will be cremated and returned to be buried with her big dog sisters, Patoka and Snowy.
Thank you for the joy you have brought to my life by being a friend to Autumn. We loved her so much, and will miss her determined spirit and friendly disposition.
