   Leave a bone for Bailey

Pookles, Bailey Boo, Big Head, The Little Prince, Give Me That!, Big Red; Biggie Paws

Doggie Dynamics:
not playfulvery playful

Sun Sign:
Quick Bio:
-purebred-dog rescue

December 4th 2000

Playing catch and tug o' war; stealing other dogs' (tennis, rubber) balls; swimming in the Peninsula in Prospect Park; mud puddles; having his ears played with; SNOW!!; chasing cats; shredding cardboard boxes; howling w/fire truck sirens (see pic)

Sidewalk salt; sharing his treats; riding in the car; having his ears cleaned; being yanked away from all that yummy food people leave on the street (esp. chicken bones); not being included in hugs (he sticks his nose in)

Favorite Toy:
Squirrel hand puppet; Hedwig the owl and Cat in the Hat dolls; dirty socks and knee highs

Favorite Food:
Bagels; bananas; homemade dog biscuits; apples; raw broccoli stalks; pizza crusts

Favorite Walk:
Any path that leads to the park -- he loves being off-leash!

Best Tricks:
He can shake hands/paws on command. Sometimes he'll sit on command--but *definitely* if there's a treat involved. He can sit up like a gopher if you hold a treat above his head & say "Gopher!" And he's mastered the high five!

Arrival Story:
We got Bailey from the Animal Service League, a rescue org. in upstate New York, and picked him up at a TGI Friday's parking lot in New Jersey. As soon as we pulled into the parking garage at home, he threw up -- not an auspicious beginning! He didn't eat or poop his first 3 days in NYC; we figured he was nervous around us (and in the big city) and unsure if he was going to stay with us for good. Eventually he came to trust us and feel secure. We can't imagine why his original owner gave him up, but we are so happy and grateful to have such a funny, friendly and crazy dog!

Bailey charms his neighbors -- and gets away with murder -- in Park Slope, Brooklyn. He'd love it if you stopped to pet him if you see him. But if you're carrying a ball, a doll or some treats, watch out! Showcasing a cool new photo taken by friend he made in Prospect Park.

Embarassing Habit:
Bailey has a human friend named Hillary who works at the liquor store by our house and always gives him treats & makes a fuss over him whenever we stop by. (She took the primary photo of him on this page.) Whenever we're near the store, either across the street or on the corner, he vigorously pulls whoever is holding the leash toward the liquor store, which makes us look like complete drunks. Esp. if it's, say, 8 in the morning or late at night. Like, why is he so familiar with this store??

The other day in the park, Louise & I were playing catch w/my favorite ball, a Planet Dog rubber glow-in-the-dark ball w/the Earth's land masses glued on. I popped off the continents months ago, but it's still the best ball for throwing and fetching purposes (easy to throw, sails far, fits snugly in my mouth, difficult to puncture).

Someone asked about the ball b/c it's so perfect & I was enjoying it so much and Louise told her that it was a rubber ball that originally looked like planet Earth, but I'd forcefully eliminated each of the countries one-by-one. The woman replied, "Oh, just like the President!" They thought that was hilarious and Louise immediately named it my "dubya" ball. Huh? What's that?

Liberals are so weird.

Can't I get a moment's peace??

Apparently not. Thelma & Louise carried out their threat to send Nestlé to day care with me. Her first day was last Thursday and she was sooo nervous when Todd came to pick us up. She didn't know whether she should leave w/him or not! Louise & I told her I knew him & it was OK, but she was still nervous when she got in the back of the van. Thankfully, she didn't embarrass either of us during the day, except she barked at everything--people, dogs, birds, trucks…it was ridiculous. And she didn't like nap time too much. But in the afternoon I went over to her & we played for a while & I introduced her to my friends. She played well w/everyone and was nice to Britta and Deb, who thought she was sweet.

At least Tuesdays are allll mine (they don't have room for her in the doggie van on Tuesdays). I need a break!
