Bio: RIP 1/1994-3/9/2005
Cleve is a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with hermangiosarcoma in December, 2002, and had his spleen removed. We were referred to an oncologist who recommended three different treatments: do nothing, and he may live three months; standard chemo, and he may live six to nine months; or treat the cancer agressively and see what happens. We decided to see what happens, and treated the cancer agressively and added elements of homeopathic treatments as well. Cleve is a different dog. Although he is 10 years old, he seems years younger. He still is taking medication and us on a special diet. Cleve is also the only dog the vet is caring for who is doing so well.
Cleve is very intelligent and talkative. He will "tell" you that he wants something (after a while, you can figure out what he wants by the tone of his bark). Cleve will answer questions - I'll ask him what he wants, and he'll go to what he's asking for - outside, food, snack, walk, etc. Cleve gets very demanding when he wants to go to bed (I guess we're all supposed to go together). If we're no ready, I'll tell him that it's alright to go to bed, and he'll slink off into the bedroom.
Cleve was put to sleep after being ill for several weeks. He finally stopped eating and was taken to the vet to see what was wrong. The vet noted many tumors in his lungs and said that Cleve was drowning and nothing could be done. He went quickly and peacefully. We are consoled by the fact that Cleve's initial treatment may prolong the lives of other dogs.
Cleve is now at the dog beach in the sky. Sleep well, good friend. We will always miss you and remember the joy you brought to our lives.
