Oh No!!

Mom called, Turner woke up and the drain tube was folded at the end and stuck to the inside of his leg. She used some warm compressess to get it to unstick and it popped out of the hole! So after a phone call to the e-vet on call we've got to keep warm compresses on it to keep the hole open and get him to the vet first thing in the morning. Hubby will take him while I go to work.

This is slowly becoming a nightmare... Oh yea, he hasn't eaten since yesterday afternoon and is refusing food so far. Time for a trip back to the vets....

Come on buddy - feel better..

Another long night! Got home yesterday and took of the Bite-Not collar. Turner did his business out front on lead. We got back into the house and he was shaking like crazy. His drain is dripping pretty steadily which I know is good. But he doesn't understand it and is freaked out. How do you explain to a dog that it'll be alright!? He refused to eat his dinner last night but got ate a few treats. We iced his right leg most of the evening - it is so swollen it hurts to look at it.

We woke up at 1 am and I took him outside. He peed 2x's. I put his Bite-Not collar on and he laid down on one of the pillows in the living room. I was so exhausted I fell right to sleep. When the alarm went off he was laying on the same pillow facing a different direction. Took his collar off and tried to coax him to eat. Mixed some chicken, chicken broth with his food. No luck. He did manage to take his meds with cheese. I iced his leg again and he just laid there. I'm hoping it was too early to eat and when he wakes up later he will eat for my mom. If he doesn't that's 24 hours with no food when I get home and he'll have to go to the e-vet. He's such a good dog and doesn't deserve to be uncomfortable... :(

What a long night...

We had a good day yesterday. Turner took his pills and slept the majority of the day. Went to the bathroom - no problem. Ate his meals no problem. Then the evening came and he freaked out. He's swollen real bad on his right leg and a little bit on his left. He's so sore from standing that his legs are hurting. When I massage his legs it's like crackle paper... from the air and fluid. You can feel it bubbling in there and it's freaking him out. Last night it got bad. He wouldn't lay down and was pacing the house. I put on his Bite-Not collar and he became more nervous. Not a good sign... Gave him more massage with the collar on until he settled down. He finally fell asleep (from exhaustion).

I got up for work this morning at 4:30 am exhausted. Took of his Bite-not collar and took him out for a pee. Luckily he ate breakfast and took all of his pills without a problem. Put the Bite-not collar back on and gave mom my blessings for the day. I feel so bad for him and hope he gets better. His drain is working like a champ, I've washed every sheet, pillow cover, comforter and towel at least once so far. I don't care about that, actually I was prepared for it and it's working out fine with the linen rotation.

I pray he has a better day/night today..

Picked Turner up this afternoon - he had the cone of shame on but was all wiggly! The vet brought him out and said he must remain calm and gave me that LOOK.. So I knelt down and said Hey Bud settle down. Which he did immediately! Told hubby - take him outside to smell/pee and I'll be out.

I asked the vet how big the mass was and she put up both hands like they were holding tennis balls. "About this big". She was so shocked! She had to lower his penis to remove the entire mass. Once again, shaking her head. She stated that there was a blood supply as big as a pencil to it, which she cauterized as well as several nerves. She stated that she looked the nerves up to make sure they weren't major ones and didn't find a name for them. She was very concerned about the whole procedure and ensured me that he was definately not as uncomfortable now. That was good! He's got a drain and some pretty heavy drugs. He's on narcotics for 10 days to keep him calm. His entire right leg is swollen, The right side of his penis is swollen and has a drain in the far groin area - 3 suture areas total. He's been sleeping without any collar on because I'm home and can make sure he doesn't touch anything. When we go to bed tonight I'll put on the cone of shame just to be safe.

He gets the drain removed on Tuesday night, sutures the following Wednesday morning. He must stay calm for at least 2 weeks - thanks to the help of the narcotics I think we may be able to accomplish that. His drugs are as follows: Antibiotics Clavamox abd Baytril Pain: Rimadyl and Tramdol.

Karl drove us home, I sat in the back with Turner on lead. I had a flannel quilt for him to lay on. Which he pretty much passed out on because it was something soft. The hour drive back wasn't too bad. We got to the house and Darcy went crazy!! She wanted him to play so bad. But settled down withing a few minutes - realizing that he wasn't feeling well. She started to whine and wouldn't leave his side for a while. When she realized he's home and everything is alright she ssettled down and came over for some strokes of reassurance. He drank a whole bowl of water and just stood there dazed, then drank another 1/2 bowl of water. Good news is he ate, peed and pooped. We all know that intake and output is the key of life in the dog world.

So we're not out of the woods yet but we're on a good path for recovery. I took of work tomorrow. That way mom can figure out his signs for going to the bathroom and such. I'm so relieved she's here. Mom's in her 70's and can't lift, push or pull but she can open and close a door.

More updates to follow...

Hi everyone it's Lya (lea) Turner's mom. I just wanted to say thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. It means so much to have someplace I can go and write my thoughts and views and not be looked at like I'm this crazy dog lady! :) I've met so many amazing people on Dogster and have had some of the most intense conversations about a wide variety of dog stories, issues and laughs and really do enjoy every minute of it.

When the vet said this was serious and that she hadn't seen anything like it before we all got a little worried. Not at her abilities - she is an amazing person and we are truly blessed to have found her after the last vet basically butchered Turner. But that Turner will be in alot of pain and have a long recovery. But I keep thinking he's in the best of care medically and at home so he'll be alright.

Anyway, as I babble, thank you all once again for your thoughts and prayers. We do appreciate all of you! Have a wonderful day and give all of your pups a hug from us!

Lya and Karl (aka mom and dad)

Update on Turner's Surgery

Well we got there on time and the vet told me her game plan. Knock him out, blood work, x-rays and then she'll call me. Well that got delayed until 3pm, they had an emergency. Well She called me back at 4pm and said he was just x-rayed and the mass in the groin is definitely not a hernia and wanted permission to go in for an exploration of the area. She also stated that he was extremely uncomfortable when I left, he couldn't lay down in the cage at all. The anesthesia took forever and they were closely monitoring him. Well I called back at 5:30 and she was just putting in the last suture and they asked if I could hold on for a moment. Once the vet got on she was extremely concerned. She stated that the mass was serious and very involved. She had to cauterize blood vessels and nerves to remove it. She used dissolvable sutures in the groin area but there is a drain tube that'll have to be removed in a couple of days. The front area (where he had surgery in December) she removed both nodules sending one off for biopsy and used regular sutures in that area.

Before she picked up the phone to talk to me she sliced open the groin area mass. She said it appears to be lymph node material but upon slicing it she smelled dead/dying material. She stated that Turner will be in alot of pain and that the vet techs were applying ice packs to the area all night. He's coming home tommorrow afternoon with 2 anti-biotics, Rimidyl and pain medication. With strict orders to say calm and quiet. Luckily our house is very quiet and calm.

My mom and dad arrived in the snow storm to help. Dad is heading back home tomorrow and mom's job will be to open the door for Turner so he can relieve himself in the yard. He won't be able to use the doggie door for quite some time.

And through it all is Darcy, sitting at home wondering where her friend is. She knows he left and wasn't feeling well. When we got home I went downstairs to turn on lights for my dad (we have an apt in the basement). Turns out Darcy had her first accident ever since being here. It's our fault - we closed the doggie door and were gone way too long. When she was in TX she had a pitbull friend who collapsed and died in front of her and she became depressed for a long time. I wish they could speak to us and us to them so they could understand that everything will be alright.

I looked at the crate door that Turner tried to jump over and realized how strong of an impact it was. He bent the wire that you use to open/close for the crate - so when he landed on the door and flipped the crate the wire went right into his groin the whole way down to the ground. Ouch! One thing I will mention that is amazing - not once has he cried in pain or wimpered. He's grunted a few times while trying to lay down but that is it. He is so strong in spirit I just admire him so..

Well it's getting late - it'll be a sleepless night, the balance is off. Gonna be a long day tomorrow. We'll keep everyone posted.

Surgery tommorrow... :(

I go in for surgery at 9:20 tommorrow morning. Say a prayer for me and keep me in good thoughts. My lump in my groin is as big as a blue handball (ouch!!) My other two lumps have grown some as well and I'm not a happy dog by any means... Mom does nothing but hug me, rub my legs - I stand alot because I can't lay/sit comfortably and of course cry.... BUT, I'll be in great hands and we'll get to the bottom of it all tommorrow. I've got to stay the night and mom and dad will pick me up Thursday.

Mom bought me a Bite-not collar, it's like a c-spine, for after the surgery that way I won't have to wear the cone of shame again!! She's put it on me a couple of times already and I'm alright with it! :)

Keep me in your thoughts. Mom will give an update as soon as she hears from the vet...

Surgery Again :(

So mom and dad took me to the vet. The meds aren't helping much if at all and I'm pretty uncomfortable with sitting/laying down... The vet gave me a thorough (yes, I was violated - again!) exam and decided that I definately needed surgery to see what was going on... The two lumps on my incision site are going to be removed and BIOPSIED... The lump in my going will be explored and possibly removed. I'm also going to spend a night at the hospital and mom and dad will pick me up in the morning.

Mom is freaked, after such a hard time at the last surgery she's very worried. The vets assured her that they use a different anesthesia and I should be much better. We'll see.

Grandma is coming up to help out. Mom ordered a Bite-Not collar for me so I can get out of the doggie door if I need to. If not, grandma will be there to make sure I can get in and out of the house alright.

Surgery will be Wednesday, luckily mom and dad are off Wed/Thurs and mom intends on taking off Friday. Grandma will be in town until the 20th, so I'll have plenty of humans to help.

Boo boo update....

Well my boo boo in my groin area hasn't gone down. :( Mom and dad are taking me back to the vet tonight. Mom is pretty upset. After the last surgery I didn't do too good. Now it looks like I'm gonna need another one. :( Where my sutures were there are 2 lumps one and the beginning and one at the end. The one at the end is as big as a peanut M&M. The one at the other end is as big as a ping pong ball... Then the lump in my groin makes it hard for me to sit and very hard for me to get comfortable laying down. We're wondering if I pinched something inside or what. I'm licking it and that doesn't help either. :(

Anyway, we'll keep ya posted...

Good visit...

Went to grandma and grandpa's this week. Grandpa turned 76 on the 22nd of March. He was so happy to see me! Uncle Mark and Uncle Matt were there as well.

Mom is a bit concerned. My swelling has not gone down. But she's gonna give the meds a week to set in. I'm not real happy having a lump the size of a golfball and two smaller lumps on my side. Me? I just want things to go back to normal...

Darcy will be home tonight. Mom's picking her up from the kennel. She really likes it there - hope I do when I go in May!!
