Dog O' My Heart

A Short Dance in Time

Is it only a year
That you and I still
Met another October
With a walk on our hill.

Just you and I
A chill in the air,
Told of another year gone,
Of the history we shared.

Of endless Octobers,
Of seasons long gone,
Of more years before us,
Of a life well done.

Which is why when you looked,
Your eyes meeting mine,
Straight into my soul,
I knew it was time.

I prayed to the gods,
Just a little more time,
I just can’t let go,
Of this heart dog of mine.

And so we fought,
We gave it our best,
His great heart still beat,
Just for a while, we withstood the test.

When the Good Shepherd’s whistle
At last bade Pete home,
I prayed “Take care of him, God”
And to Pete, “That’ll do”.

We fought the good fight,
My Petey and me.
Just a short dance in time,
For my Petey and me.

That day surely will come,
And I too will be free,
To dance in heaven's green fields,
My Petey and me.
