Arrival Story:
D.J.'s story is a heart-breaker...About a year after getting Zaar, my wife and began to consider getting another doxie to keep him company (all you dachshund owner know the adage - dachshunds are like potato chips, you can't have just one!). Well it was a Thursday, and I picked up the Honolulu Advertiser that day and scanned the pet ads. I happened upon an ad for 10 month old pure-bred mini black and tan. The ad stated - prefer to sell to someone who already has doxies...I called up, and DJ's first guardian relayed the saddest story: DJ was a pure-bred mini, he was from New Zealand (from the only "breedable" pure-bred line exported from the nation) and he was depressed. His littermate, a cream-colored doxie named Apollo, had been killed about 8 weeks earlier. Their backyard neighbors had pitbulls, and the pitbulls were chasing a rabbit that was in the common area behind their homes. Instead of breaking the fence facing there, the pitbulls actually tore through the fence into DJ and Apollo's yard....the two boys fought, but the pitbull badly mauled Apollo, his guardian didn't relate how DJ escaped, but I think it only by the grace of God that she got into the backyard before the dog turned on D.J. Anyway, hours of emergency surgery were not enough to save Apollo, and D.J. sunk in a deep funk. He wouldn't eat, rarely slept and his health was declining. His guardian did not know what to do, the family was so attached to him, but they were moving to Florida and didn't want to buy another dog. At the same time, D.J. needed to be forced fed by a vet and had lost an alarming amount of weight. The family struggled for weeks with the decision, and that Thursday I called just so happened to be the first day they had run the ad...(I think she was shocked that someone was calling for DJ that same morning). I asked why she was selling, and after hearing the story I relayed above, I knew it was meant to be. I invited her to bring DJ over for a play-date with Zaar. We would let THEM decide whether or not they wanted to be brothers. (I think this laid back attitude set her mind at ease--DJ is quite shy around new people and the family didn't want to turn his care over to someone just interested in breeding him because of his pedigree) Well, the first thing DJ did upon coming into our home was eat out of Zaar's food dish (much to our collective amazement). The second thing he did was poop on our area rug! Well, that sealed it. D.J. was instantly comfortable and made himself at home....We have a doggy door in the back, and Zaar showed D.J. how to use it....we'll after about an hour, it was clear, D.J. was showing a pep and energy he had not displayed since the attack on Apollo. After about an hour we all realized this was going to work out, but then it sunk in with his guardian--she would going home without him. It was a very emotional and tearful goodbye, but D.J. stayed with us and he'll be part of our family forever.
