History:The Labradoodle originated in Australia in the 1980s when a breeder named Wally Conran crossed the Standard Poodle and the Labrador Retriever in order to develop a hypoallergenic assistance dog. After several years of breeding, Australian fans of the Labradoodle eventually claimed it to be a breed of its own—not just a hybrid. Today, two Labradoodles are recognized, the Australian Labradoodle (which is bred from two Labradoodles) and the American Labradoodle (which is bred from a Standard Poodle and a Labrador). The Look of the Labradoodle:The Labradoodle has a medium-sized, athletic frame covered in a straight or wavy coat that comes in a wide range of solid colors including red, black, cream, blue, gold and chocolate. Its broad, well-chiseled head has close-hanging ears, round eyes and a square, fleshy nose. It has a level back and a saber-like tail that hangs low. Overall, the Labradoodle has a friendly and animated look. What They're Like to Live With:The Labradoodle brings an amazing, energetic sense of fun to any household. Always up for a game, a joke or a run, this canine can boost anybody’s mood. Highly intelligent, the Labradoodle is easily trained and it learns commands quickly—except when it feels like joking around. The Labradoodle has the Labrador's friendly attitude and the Poodle's protectiveness. Always good natured and restrained, the Labradoodle nevertheless makes a vocal and vigorous watchdog. It is a beloved companion, ever faithful, and it gets along especially well with children.
The Labradoodle will be perfectly happy living in an apartment, but keep in mind that this is an energetic, sometimes boisterous canine. It needs lots of exercise to maintain an even keel. Take it for long walks in the neighborhood or hikes in protected outdoor areas—it loves to splash around in the water.
