From 1994-1995 I worked in Bangladesh for a village-level development organization. I heard unbelievable first-hand stories from coastal residents of the devastation caused by cyclone-created tidal surges that would push walls of ocean well inland leaving families and homes in tatters or worse. Later I had the chance to travel to similar regions in the area including Sumatra, Malaysia, Thailand and India, where I always had no choice but to take note of the absence of a safety net for too many of their residents. The recent tsunami waves we’ve watched so many times on our TV’s have changed those affected communities for generations. After assessing the human toll, it’s not long before one wonders what can happen to their pets and animals. The Humane Society International has committed to bring relief by helping care for the animals and their caretakers and we think they are a trustworthy organization.
