Neighbor Rescues Nearly-Drown Dog From Bathtub
Last Edited: Thursday, 04 Oct 2007,Van Nuys — A 19-year-old Van Nuys man who allegedly tried to drown one of his dogs was charged today with a felony count of animal cruelty.
Casey Purser is accused of throwing his Shih Tzu, Toby, in a bathtub and attempting to drown the animal on Monday after returning home from jail on bail in an unrelated drug case and discovering the dog had defecated on the carpet.
A neighbor rescued the dog, administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and took it to a veterinary hospital. The canine, which was also given oxygen, survived.
Purser was arrested when he went to the veterinary hospital to pay the medical bills, authorities said.
A second dog, a pit bull puppy named Evesue, was taken by authorities in connection with his arrest.
Purser was freed from jail Tuesday on $45,000 bail and is due in Van Nuys Superior Court on Oct. 23 for arraignment. Prosecutors are asking that his bail be increased to $100,000.
