Crash sends 36 dogs spilling onto highway, where 4 die
WISCONSIN DELLS A trailer containing dozens of dogs overturned on a local highway early Friday morning, sending the animals spilling onto the roadway where four were struck and killed, authorities said.
Twenty-nine other dogs, including 18 puppies, were recovered and taken to the Sauk County Humane Society in Baraboo. Three dogs were missing.
The dogs owner, who was slightly injured in the crash, said she will keep three of the dogs but has agreed to let the Humane Society adopt the rest, according to WISC-TV of Madison.
She realized she wasnt able to take care of the animals at this time, so shes allowing us to try to adopt them out and get them homes, said Justin Huelsemann, animal control manager at the Humane Society.
Wendy Schneider, the shelters director, said she hoped the dogs would be adopted quickly.
Its a tremendous hardship because we only have room for 24 dogs and we already had about 15, she said.
The dogs will have to be vaccinated and neutered but should be ready for adoption Monday, Schneider said.
