Surgery for spinal injury in dogs

By: Dr. Tom Watson, News 14 Carolina

We have all heard of people who slip discs in their back, which causes paralysis. Dogs can have the same thing.

Dr. Bob Bergman, board certified neurologist, said some dogs suffering from a slipped disc can be treated. But first, they must undergo additional diagnostics consisting of a myelogram or a CT scan. Even an MRI can help diagnose the problem.

What a veterinarian looks for in a scan is an abnormality in the spinal cord. The ruptured disc that the abnormality indicates can cause an inability to walk. But the problem can be alleviated.

“Surgery would involve an incision on the top of the animal,” said Bergman. “We would approach the bone from this manner and remove the bone to be able to access the spinal cord and the spinal canal.

“Then the actual disc material from inside the spinal canal would be removed and that would decompress the spinal cord.”

About 90 percent of ruptured disc cases can be cured this way, Bergman said.
