When Snoop Lion appeared on Chelsea Handler’s TV show Chelsea Lately, the last thing we thought they would do is debut a new dog food they created together, which helps shelters by donating one product for every product sold.

I mean, literally, that was the last thing we thought they would do.

But there we were, on Thursday night, listening to Handler joke that Snoop Lion messed everything up by changing his name to Snoop Lion — Snoop Dogg obviously being the better name, if not the best name ever, for someone in the business of selling dog food.

“We’re doing a project together, because we worked hard to come up with this really great dog food called Dog for Dog, and then he changed his name to Lion and that doesn’t help the dog food,” said Chelsea.

Cue laughter.

We waited to see whether this was a set up for a gag. It wasn’t. Snoop Lion and Chelsea Handler are in the dog food business together. But they’re not in it alone, but are rather “partners” on a team that also features — wait for it — Michael Buble (and also some business-types and dog-food pros, so the Dog for Dog dog food can actually be created and sold and not just talked about on talk shows).

On her show, Chelsea went on:

“It’s called Dog for Dog and we spent a lot of money, a lot of people got involved to research this human food that we can give to dogs. So humans can eat it and dogs can eat it, and every time you buy a bag of this dog food, they send another bag to an animal shelter and they save dogs’ lives. It’s a really good cause.”

Yep, that’s the big idea: For every product sold, the company will donate one to a shelter. Or, in the words of the website: “Every time you purchase our dog food and treats, we donate a like item to a dog in need. It’s that simple: when you buy one, we give one.”

As for the dog food, it appears to be quality stuff — humans can eat it, after all. The company sells Dogsbars, nutrition bars that are specially formulated for dogs; Dogsbutter, a peanut butter designed for dogs containing peanuts, golden flaxseed, and palm fruit oil, with no sugar, salt, soy, or hydrogenated oils; Dogtreats, made with fresh fruits and vegetables and free of wheat, corn, and soy; and three different dog food blends: Engage, Enrich, Empower, and Energize.

It seems like a great idea, and we hope it takes off. As for the strangeness of someone like Snoop Lion selling dog food, Chelsea addressed that on her show.

“This is what’s great about you,” Chelsea said to Snoop Lion. “You do so many things that no one would expect you to do. You coach that little football team right? How do you do that when you’re high all the time?”

Cue laughter.
