A Florida man became his dog’s best friend when he pulled her from the jaws of a 7-foot alligator.

It all started on Sunday when Mandy, his Wheaten terrier, went to take a walk in their backyard.

David Grounds, of West Palm Beach, let his dog out unleashed in his waterfront backyard at about 8 a.m. today.

The dog ran to the water’s edge, where she was grabbed by an alligator. Quick-thinking Grounds, 65, ran over, and grabbed the alligator’s mouth with his hands while poking it in its eye with his thumb.

The alligator, which was about 7-feet-long, bit Grounds’ right hand, ripping off one finger and partially severing the other, said Gabriella Ferraro of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

“He was powerful,” Grounds said from his Palms West Hospital bed Saturday night.

Mandy had lacerations on her stomach and was taken to the vet, she was treated and released. Grounds spent a few days in the hospital and is now recovering at home. The alligator was trapped and euthanized.
