Sustainable Energy From Dog Poo
As you’re cleaning up the yard or responsibly plastic-bagging your canine friends poop, keep in mind that you may be throwing away a source of alternative energy. The responsible folks in San Francisco have enlisted the aid of Norcal Waste to start a pilot program using biodegradable bags and dog-waste carts to collect dog feces at area dog parks. The bagged feces will then be dropped in machines where it will be fed on by bacteria to create methane gas.
The methane gas can be piped into anything using natural gas or it could be used to create electricity.
According to a Norcal Waste spokesman, the technology is not new. Its been used in Europe for about twenty years to convert dog waste. Its also been used in the States by a number of dairy, hog and chicken farms.
Wow! We all knew cleaning up after our dogs took a lot of energy but who would have thought it could actually create energy?
