Anyone who has ever had a dog knows all about unconditional love. A forever love in a forever home, it is so pure, so enriching for pets and humans alike that it needs more than one day to celebrate it.

Saturday is Valentine’s Day, but for PetSmart Charities, the giving and receiving of love that comes with pet adoption is a two-day event.

The PetSmart Charities Be My Valentine Adoption Weekend takes place Saturday and Sunday at your local PetSmart store. The event will allow people to meet thousands of friendly, lovable dogs and cats who are looking for their forever home.

More than 3,000 animal welfare organizations will be on-site at all 1,300 PetSmart stores in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

PetSmart Charities found homes for 65,471 pets over four National Adoption Weekend events last year. There were more than 425,000 total PetSmart Charities adoptions in all of 2014.

“Adopting a cat or dog is sure to bring you unconditional love –- not only on this Valentine’s Day, but for a lifetime,” said PetSmart Charities executive director Jan Wilkins. “We are thankful for our adoption partners for helping to make this event possible and for helping potential adopters fall into love with thousands of deserving pets.”

In honor of the weekend event, PetSmart Charities collected the Top 5 Reasons an Adopted Pet Makes the Best Valentine:

5. They are the best at cuddling and give you endless kisses

4. They are great listeners who think you are the smartest person in the room

3. They are always excited to see you

2. They will never complain about your cooking

1. Unconditional love…need we say more?

In order to adopt a dog or cat, visit the PetSmart Charities’ adoption center inside any PetSmart store in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15.
