Now THIS Is Public Service: Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, NJ, Saves Another Dog

Another tweet gets the mayor into dog rescue. He saves a dog locked in a crate on a vacant lot.

In January, we wrote about super Mayor Cory Booker saving a dog from freezing. A reporter had noticed the two dogs outside in the bitter chill of a cold Newark, New Jersey, night. That reporter tweeted, “Make pet owners get their dogs out of the cold. Saw 2 dogs freezing.”

Cory Booker got his hands on that tweet, got in his car, and went to find the dogs. He found only one dog, freezing. Cory made the dog warm, then hustled her into a waiting police car:

That is the way you run a city, Mr. Mayor.

Now he has done it again. He saved another dog. And, again, he got the info that the dog was in danger via Twitter. This is too much.

Here’s how it happened. On June 27, @shankdog3000 tweeted the mayor:

“@CoryBooker Is there anyone in Newark NJ who can stop the torture of a dog? There is a dog who is locked in a small crate on a vacant lot.”

You bet your ass there is. The man you just tweeted. Cory Booker.

The mayor tweeted back: “Where? I’ll go investigate now.”

Simple as that.

@shankdog3000 gave the address and Booker hightailed it over. He found a dog that was indeed in a cage and was not being treated well. He tweeted:

“I’m on the scene & Located the dog. U were right too report. Inhumane & cruel. Working 2 get the animal secure now.” Also: “Its raining pretty hard. But looks like dog is in rough shape & in a tiny cage. Figuring out a strategy now”

The rescue moved off Twitter at that point, and we get the rest of the story via U.S. News. The dog was a Pit Bull, and Booker called the Humane Society for assistance. The dog was extracted from the cage via a “snare pull” and was taken to the Humane Society’s Newark shelter.

Scott Crawford of the Humane Society told U.S. News that the dog is “bouncing off the walls” and is “a little scary right now.”

He speculated that the dog might have been mistreated.

“She’s very aggressive right now. We’re going to see how she comes around,” Crawford said.

Let’s hope she gets the care she deserves and gets offered up for adoption to a good home. We hope the more attention this story gets, the more people will get involved to make sure she doesn’t become just another shelter statistic.

Booker sent a final tweet to @shankdog3000’s wife, praising the man for speaking up:

“Your husband did a great thing. His compassion &love helped stop some really cruel treatment. Wish we could find person responsible.”

Mayors of other cities: Are you getting all this?
