Sussex County man apparently died trying to save dogs from fire

LONG NECK, Del. (AP) –

Authorities say a Sussex County man died after he went back into his burning mobile home to rescue his pets.
The 57-year-old man is the fifth Delaware resident to die in a fire this year. The state Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.

His name is expected to be released after that’s complete.

Flames broke out just after 6 this morning in the home on Branch Road west of Long Neck. Assistant State Fire Marshal Richard Ward says the origin and cause of the fire are under investigation. The mobile home was destroyed.

When Sussex County paramedics arrived, they found the victim lying in the front of the home, suffering from extensive burns. He was taken to Beebe Hospital, where he died.

The victim’s three dogs survived. They were taken to the S-P-C-A structure in Kent County.
