Once just something that filled the time while latecomers straggled into the theater, trailers are now Big News. Only a few months ago, the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens became a major news story in part because it triggered thousands of geeks into flaunting their racism to the world after seeing a single shot of a (gasp, swoon) black Imperial Stormtrooper. But even without that kind of social politics at work, I can guarantee you that I and my fellow geeks will go into such a frenzy at the merest mention of the first teaser trailer for Avengers: Civil War you would think that Thor and Black Widow had promised to come over and hang with each of us personally.
But until that happens, I’m sitting here watching the trailer for The Secret Life of Pets and loving the hell out of it. The movie itself is still a year away, but the trailer is adorable, and almost works as a short film itself. I’ve always suspected, as have most pet owners, that our animals get up to exactly this kind of stuff when we’re not looking. However, sometimes I think that their activities are much more sinister than merely hijacking the mixer for a butt rub — perhaps something more along the lines of the secret war in 2001’s Cats & Dogs.
While a lot of people will first take The Secret Life of Pets to be a Pixar flick, it’s not: It’s actually produced by the people at Illumination Entertainment, best known for the Despicable Me movies and now the recently released spinoff, Minions.
Although the movie itself isn’t slated for release until next summer, the trailer itself is charming, and a good way to give yourself that mid-day lift when you’re tired of entering quarterly report numbers into Excel. Check it out below, but don’t blame us if you start wondering what your dog is really doing with the kitchen appliances while you’re gone.
