Here’s the most recent update I’ve gotten from Kat 5 on the Kansas rescue effort. Many Dogsters have barked in about how to adopt animals or to help in other ways. Here are some links an suggestions on how anyone can be involved in helping the animals and people of Kansas.
We’re headed to Kansas, Toto.
KAT 5 Animal Rescue & KARE, in a joint effort, are heading to Kansas to rescue the animals endangered by the recent flooding and oil spill.

Story by: Susan Meyer, KAT 5 Animal Rescue
Kat 5 Animal Rescue is a 501 (c) (3) comprised of volunteers from across the country who came together in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to rescue animals. Kat 5 Animal Rescue intervenes to protect animals when a natural or man-made disaster strikes. *KAT 5 is named after Hurricane Katrina (“KAT” for Katrina), and category 5 storms, symbolizing any disaster.
Knapptime Adoption Rescue and Education (KARE), a 501(c)3 avian rescue is based in Southeast Michigan. They deployed to Baton Rouge Louisiana in support of Hurricane Katrina’s avian victims. KARE’s deployment team joined the massive animal rescue just beginning to get underway. Along with 911 Parrot Alert, Mattie Sue Athan, Julie Burge, DVM, and many other well known and willing hands got to work. KARE will rescue all animals.
“My husband is retired military (Larry Knapp, Vice President of KARE) and familiar with what to do with chemical issues, we have chemical gear if needed and 4 wheel drive”, Knapp Director Nell Knapp said today.

“Animal rescue is needed to go door to door in Kansas. Toxins in the water are dangerous to the animals & the people. The animals need to be decontaminated prior to reuniting with the pet owners. Volunteers need to be careful in the toxic water like in New Orleans after Katrina”, said Susan Meyer of KAT 5.
