We awoke today to a very pleasant surprise: Jake the Dog is the star of today’s Draw the Dog cartoon. In preparation for doing my interview with the creators of this terrific site, I decided to submit a little anecdote about Jake’s penchant for “fishing.” I wasn’t sure if cartoonist Jim George could create something out of it, but I was really hoping he could find a way to immortalize one of Jake’s odder penchants.
I should have known Jim was up to the task!
The story behind the cartoon is that while Jake may be a Labrador retriever, he doesn’t have a retrieving bone in his body — except for when it comes to retrieving fish that fisherman throw back.
Throw a ball and he runs and gets it, gives it a chonk, and drops it right there. Same with sticks and Frisbees. But heaven forbid a fisherman at our local beach throws back a perch or striped bass! Its as if Jakes saying, Hey, Mister! You forgot something! Look what you just threw back into the ocean! Dont worry, Ill get it back for you! Fortunately he has a gentle mouth, and by the time he swims back with the disgruntled fish, I can grab Jake and keep him from repeating his feat.
Jake is not the first Dogster dog to be inked on Draw the Dog. Last week, Dogsters Tea and Toni starred in an adorable cartoon there. I happen to know that Jim and Bruce are always looking for material, so if you think our pooch is cartoon-worthy, find out how to make him/her famous!
