A Real Life Lassie

In a story right out of a dog movie, the family border collie stayed with a 3-year-old child and kept her warm in the chilly evening. The story comes to us from the GlobeGazette, com in Mason City, Iowa.

Missing 3-year-old girl found safe after sleeping with family dog in cornfield

TITONKA (AP) A 3-year-old northern Iowa girl who had been missing overnight was found Tuesday after sleeping in a cornfield with the family dog, authorities said.

Allie Schutjer was located by two neighbors searching for her on all-terrain vehicles. They found the girl in a field after the family’s border collie was spotted, according to the Kossuth County Sheriffs Department.

Witnesses said the girl and dog had apparently slept side-by-side under a cornstalk after the child went missing from a family campfire about 9 p.m. Monday.

Authorities said an airplane with thermal imaging technology searched cornfields around the farm Monday night in an effort to find the girl.

The National Weather Service in Johnston said the temperature in the area was in the upper 50s overnight.
