Happy Monday, Dogsters! It’s the start of National Pet Week, and at long last, we are ready to bring you a collection of photos and stories of dozens of dear old Dogster dogs. Every day this week and through the weekend, we will present photos and descriptions or stories of several senior dogs whose people entered them in our Senior Dog Contest. These sweet dogs in their dotage are absolutely beautiful, and so are the words of their owners.
The stories behind some of these dogs will blow you away. Some have saved their owners’ lives. Some had been crudely and cruelly abandoned. One of today ‘s entries was thrown out of a moving truck while the woman who would become his future owner watched in horror. And all the dogs are cherished deeply, even though many are no longer of this earthly existence.
What better way to start National Pet Week than sharing their stories and images?
On Sunday we will post our last group of dogs, and on Monday we will announce the winner, who will be drawn at random from all the entrants. The prize: a 16″ x 20″ custom painting of the dog of the winner’s choice by artist Kathryn Beals. Along with the announcement of the winner we will present a slideshow of all the dogs in the contest so you can enjoy them in one sitting. We had originally planned to only put together a slideshow, but technical problems precluded us from being able to use stories with the photos, and the words about these dogs were too good to be thrown away, as you will soon see. Thus the delay, for which we apologize.
Look for Part 1 of 7 later this afternoon. And be sure to check in every day to see the latest entries in this incredible exhibit of elder dogs. Please note that photos will be posted approximately in the order in which we received them. We have done little to no editing, so stories appear as they were sent to us.
Photo above: Joe, the wonderful Airedale terrier who graced my life for 13 years with his clown antics and loving heart. I could not enter him the contest for obvious reasons, but he makes a fine mascot for the kickoff.
