A few weeks ago I reported on 28 dogs who were abandoned on the side of a road in Frederick, Maryland. The same shelter who received the dogs has just had 75 more dogs dropped off by a good Samaritan.

A man said he was dog sitting for a friend but quickly became overwhelmed. He tried to contact the owner, but he had seemingly disappeared. Not knowing what to do he brought the dogs to the Frederick County Animal Shelter, who is already operating at full capacity.

The group of dogs are separate from the 28 found abandoned, although it does make you question if there is a connection somewhere. All but three of those dogs have been adopted. The new group of 75 is a mix of 10 different small breeds.

So far some have been taken to shelters in Loudon County, Virginia and Ocean City. About half have been placed in foster homes, which has been a big help for Frederick County.

In the meantime, Frederick County authorities are continuing to work with those in St. Mary’s County to determine — once the owners are found — if charges should be filed.

Although the shelter was full the dogs were taken in because they have a “no refuse” policy, I’m not sure if that means their days are numbered, but I do know they desperately need homes. Anyone who would like to adopt a dog or become a foster family is asked to call the Frederick County Animal Shelter at (301) 600-1546 or visit their site at www.fchs.org.
