A man whose dog allegedly leapt onto a loaded rifle and shot him in the rear is in stable (but painful) condition in a New Zealand hospital, reports the New Zealand Herald.

The trigger-happy pooch didn’t intend harm (or so we think). He was just hopping into a four-wheel drive vehicle after his owner and three friends finished a pig hunt. Police think the dog stepped on a loaded gun that didn’t have its safety on. But gun experts I’ve talked with have said the safety could have been on, and if the dog stepped on it in the wrong way, it could still go off. (Driving with a loaded gun is a bad idea.)

This isn’t the first dog who has shot his person — or is said to have shot his person — in recent months. Here are some others I’ve blogged about:

gunmoll Earlier this year a California hunting dog stepped on her owner’s loaded shotgun gun and it went off, causing injuries that were more embarrassing than serious. Oopsy!

A Florida woman said her dog shot her husband. This feat was supposed to have been accomplished by the dog knocking down a gun that went off and killed her husband.

A California man claimed his dog tripped him while he had a semiautomatic weapon in his hand. The gun went off, and his wife went down.

Is this a canine conspiracy, or are the dogs being framed? One thing we know for sure: They’ll never tell.
