In India, volunteers from Animal Aid Unlimited successfully completely one of the most astonishing rescues we’ve ever seen. A dog had fallen into a pool of hot tar, and he was found stuck to the ground. When the tar cooled, it became rock hard, solidifying around his body. The dog became a “living statue,” according to the Independent; the only thing he could move were his eyes, which were blinking, pleading.

A passerby spotted the dog, and called for help. Volunteers from Animal Aid Unlimited showed up and hatched a simple but effective plan. They squatted around the dog, massaging vegetable oil into the dog’s fur to soften the rock-hard tar, allowing them to remove it.
The plan worked. It was slow going, but the team didn’t give up.
It took them three hours over the course of two days before they finally removed all the tar, and what they found underneath surprised everyone. A happy dog, seemingly unaffected by his ordeal. Here is he accepting treats from one of the rescuers:
