Rosebud is a beautiful English Bulldog with a face that melts hearts but masks years of pain. Rosebud was found discarded on the side of a road near Lancaster, California. She was eventually taken to the local shelter. After days at the shelter and no potential adopters, she was red-listed. The video below tells her story.
Dogs Without Borders was alerted about Rosebud, and rescuer Emma Parker-Bowles raced to Lancaster to get her. When Emma saw Rosebud for the first time, she described it as “heartbreaking.” Rosebud was severely emaciated; doctors estimated she was 20 pounds underweight. She had intestinal worms and was also fighting emotional problems.
Emma said that when she reached to pet Rosebud, “she cringes likes she is going to be beaten.” Someone had hurt her, repeatedly. Rosebud also had enlarged “hanging nipples and a large vagina”, evidence of overbreeding. It seemed as though Rosebud’s horrors would never end. Out of anxiety, Rosebud would lick areas of her body until they were hairless. She even chewed off the tip of her tail.
It seemed that Emma would never be able to reach this physically and mentally abused Bulldog. Emma brought Rosebud home and fostered her. It might have been the first time that Rosebud had known love and warmth. When Emma bent down to give Rosebud a kiss, she said the dog was at first “alarmed … but now she loves it.”
There were other firsts for Rosebud. She was uncertain about cushy beds or walking on grass. Today, she enjoys and luxuriates in her surroundings.
According to Emma, “She likes taking walks around the neighborhood and loves smelling the flowers.”
Rosebud’s life has certainly slowed as she experiences love for the first time. She was named Rosebud because witnessing this amazing transformation is like watching a flower bloom, “like a rose in the sun.”
Thankfully Rosebud has found her forever home and is living happily now.
